Mónica Michelena, representative of the Charrúa Basquadé Inchalá Community, and Maru Vidal, National Director of Culture, on #SábadoSarandí with Valeria Superchi.
Mónica Michelena: “We are that historical continuity; and now it's a joy to have been given this opportunity. This reconciliation marks a turning point. In Canada and Australia, they've held events called Reconciliation Day. It's about trusting each other again, trusting the other's word; a Charrúa value, and one shared by many immigrants; they operated with their word. Horizontal relationships: no one is better than anyone else. So, the bridge we want to build starts from there: don't talk about us without us. Uruguay must be a truly inclusive country.”
Maru Vidal: “Paths are forged together; paths cannot be built or even outlined without considering the voices we want to make visible. This is the work that has been done in our museums for many years, beyond these particular events. Removing the veil of whiteness and the construction of a Eurocentric nation—this is what contemporary museography has been working on. Its success lies in the fact that it is being done with the communities, with the people; in this case, with the Indigenous communities.”
