Barbie (2023) Movie Reaction

Today I'm watching Barbie for the very first time, and I honestly wasn't prepared for how much was packed into this movie. What starts as a colorful and funny trip through Barbie Land quickly turns into something much bigger, touching on identity, purpose, relationships, and what it means to find your place in the world.

In this reaction, I share my thoughts on the biggest moments, the comedy, the emotional scenes, and the performances from Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. From the incredible visuals and soundtrack to the deeper themes hidden beneath the surface, there's a lot to talk about.

Fun fact: According to Ryan Gosling, he accepted the role of Ken after seeing his daughter's Ken doll lying face down in the mud next to a squished lemon. He then took a shot of the doll and lemon and sent it to Greta Gerwig, saying, "I shall be your Ken, his story must be told."

A lot of people didn’t clock it that those kids Barbie spoke to were basically the bratz since they had the same exact name as them😂😂😂 so it was like Barbie doll meets bratz dolls😂😂 17:07

Fun fact: Barbie is 23% larger than everything in Barbieland to mimic (hehe) the awkward, disproportionate scale that real Barbies and Barbie activity sets are produced in. This is why Barbie sometimes appears too large for things like her car or why ceilings seem to be too low in the Dreamhouses.

funny note: ken's 'sublime!' quote was completely improved in set and they just chose to roll with it and keep it in the script and movie

Yes Billy, this is a re-upload from 3 years ago. They did it so that it matched their new video/editing style.

Pregnant Midge and the pooping dog were both discontinued because the tiny magnets that they used were a swallow hazard

Composer Mark Ronson wrote the song "I'm Just Ken" largely as a joke, and recorded a demo for Greta Gerwig not seriously expecting it to be included on the soundtrack. However she liked the song, and when she shared it with Ryan Gosling he felt so strongly that it added to the character of Ken he successfully advocated for it to be made a musical number in the film. Ronson remarked that he was amazed how much Gosling's interpretation of the song improved upon his original intent.

Went into the theater expecting a goofy movie, left with tears in my eyes and in an existential crisis😂😂😂

Ryan Gosling is a treat no matter what role he's playing but this is definitely one of my favorites 😂

I was so disappointed this movie didn't win Best Production Design at the 2024 Academy Awards. No disrespect to Poor Things, my heart really wanted Barbie to win.

Fun Fact: This movie used so much pink paint for the sets, there was a worldwide shortage of it.

8:50 So the flat foot thing is more than just a gag in this case. Barbie’s feet are iconically always pointed because she’s always wearing high heels, so much so that the same condition in real life women who wear heels too often is nicknamed Barbie feet. Her feet turning flat are part of the existential crisis Boom called out when she asked if the other Barbies ever think about dying.

I think for me what I thought was extremely interesting was that the beginning of the movie was literally them re-creating the very first ever Barbie commercial

I worked at Toys R Us. Pregnant Barbie was definitely a thing we sold. I remember them, specifically, because I was either stocking or facing stuff on the shelves and saw... Pregnant Barbie.

I'd be lying if I said I didn't proceed to ask everyone if they had seen it, yet, and spent at least half the day thinking about it.

I do also remember a co-worker cracking on the fact she had no ring, either. So we ended up calling her Baby Mama Barbie in reference.
