Why did the British relinquish territory in 1945 that later became part of East Germany? This video explores Blankenburg, Bad Sachsa, the Harbke power plant, the Helmstedt lignite mining region, and the largest territorial exchange between occupation zones in postwar Germany. The story reveals how energy supply, electricity, coal, and border policy shaped the future East German border—long before the GDR's founding. From the occupation zones of 1945 and the Harbke Agreement to the inner-German border, Offleben, Wulfersdorf, and the coal used to reinforce the border: a little-known history of German division.
