I just used an old school Shimano 3-speed hub and it works flawless

There is a "Soft Start" mode that enabling will save your geartrain to sync speed so it doesn't slam the freehub engagement points. I use a Hope hub with a STEEL HG driver. Another must have. That throttle banging is the worst thing you can do to any bike. It's just bad form.

I imagine a next generation of bikes like this will have the drivetrain together in the same place as the motor.  It makes the most sense, and allows one to get those big gears out of sight and protected.  i.e. like the Avinox.

I like the way you test things. That's exactly what I would do lol 6:23

I've got over 6k on a Microshift 9-speed cassette with a super-short derailleur with clutch. Hope 5 hub with 3 degrees of engagement so there isn't very much take-up. The only time I've snapped a chain was when I did what you did, otherwise I've not had a single issue on the road, trails, launching it off whatever I can find. I was sceptical at first too, but its proven to be pretty tough as long as you let off the power when shifting. I tend to just leave it in 4th which is 24T like the Bonnell, but shifting into 5th and 6th is just way too much fun to get rid of. Oh. the super-short derailleur keeps it tucked up much higher than a standard derailleur as well. I hope CYC starts selling the cassette on its own. That would be perfect.
Thanks for the review.
Edit: I'm running 72v with JP40 cells.

What a great video, it was well thought out and professionally presented - Thanks.

This is the best, my bike shows up this week, can't wait. Thanks!!

What an amazing video

Get yourself a 72v and you’ll hit 60 bro good video to watch 🎉 seen it on my tv first came on here to comment 🎉

i use a vesc with my own custom firmware build on my mid drive build, i added a shift sensor.
it isnt just a normal cut motor while shifting, but it uses your motors erpm + wheel speed + gear casette table filled in with teeth count + motors gear reduction ratio to calculate what gear youre riding in and then when it shift, it will insta change the motors rpm to match what it should be at that wheel speed when you change. the result is like a flappy paddle shifting card. throttle to the max, smooth shifts without destroying the chain and seemingless acceleration. its great!

Informative video, thanks for sharing.

I was eyeing the Bonnells but wanted gears, so I ended up converting a hardtail with the equivalent cyc x1 pro gen 4 kit. Good to know this is a solid fallback.

I’ve got 4000 miles of high speed high watt miles on the advent x hardened steel drivetrain without bending. I’m also still only on my first/second KMC e 9 chain because of waxing.

Also, adding gear shift sensors would practically eliminate the chain snapping risk from high wattage shifts, but if you have brake sensors, pressing just enough to engage the cutoff without braking has the same effect.

I personally just spliced into the wires and added a switch that connected the blue to black for manual cutoff purposes cuz I already had the parts.

Great video

good video

Great insight

it sounds so cool shifting it lol

I had the gen 3 X1 Pro on a custom hardtail build, but I just had a normal shimano deore cassette on there. The motor actually gave out before anything on the bike did. I was always very careful about how I shifted... the motor is just not meant to handle potholes at 50mph. Eventually it started getting louder and louder, I noticed it took more throttle to engage the motor. I took it off and sent it to get fixed, they said the freewheel was broken, the planetary gearbox was broken, and the motor core was out of alignment. Essentially it's broken and needs to be trashed. This was after a little over 1000 miles, and just past any manufacturer warranty for me. I'm sortof on the fence now on if I want to buy a gen 4, but there really aren't many other options with this level of power output

Man I'm like 300 lb and I use the GX12 speed from SRAM on the CYC Gen4 and surprisingly it's pretty damn strong

So I’ve watched every Bonnell video ever made and this one by you is selling me on this bike. It seems so torquey with this gear set and you’re getting top end. I want an electric mountain bike that pulls hole shots does wheelies and roosts in the corners.

I wanna ride in all the places I can’t ride my dirtbike. I’m scared I’m gonna be underwhelmed coming from a Husqvarna two-stroke 300 Enduro But the lightweight maneuverability, decent top and speed, and now being able to shift through gears like a dirtbike put this thing at the top of my list.

A Stark Vargas just too big and too heavy to rip around in town without eventually getting in trouble and arrested on the beach. The fact that I could pull wheelies down Main Street on this thing and then go rip a skate park with it and ride the beach at low tide. It’s fucking amazing. This feels like the bike I’ve been waiting my whole life for.

I ride an electric mountain bike every day for work. I guide a pack of 10 dogs off leash through various wilderness terrains in California. This compared to my 750 W Lectric XPeak Gen2 mountain bike is gonna be a whole New World !! I just wanna do wheelies all day and get paid for it…🎉🎉🎉🎉 🐕

Thank you truly for making these videos. I watch all of yours because you’re the only one who really rips this bike like a dirt bike and puts it fully to the . I have yet to see it pull Hill clans, but I’m sure it’ll get the job done to some degree.

I have had pretty good luck with Microshift Acoylte H-Series 8 speed cassette and derailleur with a 2000w mid-drive ebike pushing 160 NM of torque. It's a full steel cassette. I think the CYC 5 speed is still a bit tougher though, but if you wanted 8 speeds, it might be worth a try.

you can hold the derailleur and shift it one or two times to pull slack out of the system.
