Most American opinion is based on WW2 rationed food they encountered in Britain. Traditional English food is heavily regional, as evidenced by named dishes like Melton Pork pie, Cornish pasty etc. American food is based on dishes brought in by immigrants from all over the world.
A local butcher just east of Melbourne in Australia makes a pie with slow-cooked beef, Guinness gravy, with lots of sharp cheddar throughout the mix and baked in a tall shortcrust pastry with buttery puff pastry on top. A fabulous winter warmer (it's winter now).
