Getting to this stunning Southland river is an adventure itself. A tough hike over a high mountain ridge is necessary, to get there, but catching around 20 trout is well worth the effort. Camping in fantastic scenery, fishing success and a 2 days hike made this trip an unforgettable adventure into the majestic New Zealand wilderness.

I've fished that river once in 2012ish and it was amazing. I caught about 20 and lost about 20 on the fly rod as a below average fly fisherman, over about 5 days. There were literally 5 other fishermen there at the camp and they all caught lots of fish too. It was so easy back then, really fun place to fish. Then I went back about 2020 and it was so difficult. I caught 3 in a few days, but I didn't fish as hard as I did on the first visit.
Much of NZ is like this now, so much harder to catch fish, on the fly at least. I have wondered what it would be like to spin fish deep pools and deep runs where there's no room for back casts. It's interesting to watch your videos and see the results.
Were there a couple of wekas at the campsite? lol they had a stash of items they'd raided in that little area of manuka scrub. I found a toothbrush, a dehydrated meal (empty, with a big hole in it), coffee, a bundle of fishing line. Haha lots of good memories, thanks to you posting your videos I am remembering them.
