Get a lot of questions and some think I'm lying about the temperature (no, I never have).  If the title says -30, it should go without saying that that's the LOW for the trip...the temp fluctuates, of course.
So I made a video for the top 11 FAQs I get about winter camping:
1) If it's so cold, why can't you see your breath? https://youtu.be/a_nrGUte8dM?t=14
2) If it's so cold, why is there slush on the lake? https://youtu.be/a_nrGUte8dM?t=31
3) Why aren't you melting snow for water? https://youtu.be/a_nrGUte8dM?t=51
4) What is the temp inside the tent? https://youtu.be/a_nrGUte8dM?t=102
5) Why winter camp at all? https://youtu.be/a_nrGUte8dM?t=155
6) Why aren't you wearing snowshoes? https://youtu.be/a_nrGUte8dM?t=191
7) How do you poop when it's that cold? https://youtu.be/a_nrGUte8dM?t=219
8) Aren't you worried about carbon monoxide from the stove? https://youtu.be/a_nrGUte8dM?t=283
9) Aren't you afraid of animals attacking you?  Where's your gun? https://youtu.be/a_nrGUte8dM?t=318
10) How you you power your devices? https://youtu.be/a_nrGUte8dM?t=396
11) Why don't you use a floor? https://youtu.be/a_nrGUte8dM?t=439
Hope it helps clear some things up.

Bro I've been ice fishing my entire life and always took every precaution possible, until last winter I was off grid with snowmobiles at a lodge and went to get firewood down the lake because there wasn't much good jack pine close to camp. My buddy who was with me at the time didn't have a float suit and I did, he ended up going through an otters breathing hole it was late January as well, I turned around and he was neck deep and his legs were entangled in roots and sticks from the bank... Anyway lets just say he was lucky my adrenaline was through the roof because he weighed nearly 100lbs more than me not including the water soaking in his clothing, somehow I managed to yank him out without going in myself... Cheers stay safe :)

Not sure if people realise the amount of work that goes into the planning and edits on this. I for one really appreciate it!!!

This man deserves more supporters to pay back his effort put in his videos.

Dude im so glad you started doing thus full time, its hard to tell you how awesome it is when notification comes thru with a new lost lakes video, keep up all the awesome content!!!

Hey Jon,
I just feel like I owe you a thank you. I have been stuck in my apartment quite a lot lately due to health issues. But what I am craving is nature. I recently discovered your channel and have spent many hours watching you and Erin's adventures. The videos have brought me a lot of peace. Take care. Many thanks from NYC.

I can’t even express how you thanking the fish made me feel. I’ve been vegetarian for 7 years and the only meat I think I’d ever eat again would be via catching my own fish while camping. I could feel how much you appreciated it’s sacrifice and deeply respect the fish- so thank you for sharing that and being so genuine.

The best 37 minutes on the tube… -35not a big deal when you have prepared and understand how to survive in cold conditions.. well done Jon..

Filleting a trout with ice auger is the most Canadian thing I’ve ever seen 😆 Good thing you had that auger multi-tool 2.0!

Your editing was top game here, no lame slow zooms, generic background tones, just dogma five documentary style, very cool to watch

Thanking the fish. World needs more humans like u dawg

Jon, thank you so much for your content! Hope to see you review one of the tents manufactured by RBM Outdoors. Can't wait to see what you have to say ❤

YO U HIT 70K!
CONGRATS!

Thank you again, Jon, for taking us along for the ride. I have to say your mood/setting shots are unrivaled in your genre, and did I detect some influence from the Xander school of video editing (quick cuts of wood stacking)? Nice to have an uneventful trip after last week, which just proves the universal constant: the wave corrects itself. You deserved that

Hi Jon, I love the way you take things in stride. No matter what the occurrence you seem to overcome all obstacles. Your confidence as a true woodsman is apparent but you also exude a peaceful mindfulness that is a great example for all of use. Thank you!

Coming from north country myself, I love the winter views. We are fortunate, that were born/live here. Not as cold here in Michigan, it rarely dips much past -15...except for the polar vortex winters back in 2012-2014 where we seen wind chills of -30's. It is a force to be reckoned with and carefully prepared for. Excellent video!!!!

Yep ! That was a Martin !

I like these 'serious' adventure videos: not just 'parachute in'; take some footage and get home for dinner with the family.'  The starry sky and illuminated tent frames were awesome.  The feeling that a hot tent is still survivable (even comfortable) shelter for several days can't be conveyed on a day trip.

Late night here in Sweden in the middle of summer and this video makes me longing for the long, cold and dark arctic winter. Thank you for doing this and bringing us with you.

Just beautiful. The pace was perfect. Watched on a big screen with the lights turned off, you get a real feeling of being there (minus the 55 or so Celsius degree difference between my living room and your surroundings). What's also really enjoyable is reading all the comments here ... quality people tuning in !
