The Academy refusing to nominate international, Asian, Hispanic, or Black actresses often led to these dull lineups. The other thing that stands out to me is them often not nominating actresses from genres that are not dramas or musicals. Many performances in horror, sci-fi, comedy, romance, mysteries, crime dramas, and even film noirs did not get nominated.

Brian looks ten years younger clean-shaven.

About Winona Ryder, I feel like her best performance was in Girl interrupted (1999) but since she wasn't even nominated that year, she should have won for Little Women, her second best performance in my opinion.

1936 was so ironic... the first year they have supporting oscars but best actress went to.. a supporting performance.

I agree with Streep in "Music Of the Heart".  It's almost guaranteed at that time ANYTHING Streep did ensured a nomination.  The fact that Glenn Close has NEVER received the Oscar is beyond reprehensible!

For those who remember the James Somerton drama, the 1994 Best Actress lineup actually came up. If I remember correctly, one of his many inaccurate statements was saying that lineup is known as one of the best in Oscars history when in reality most people see it as one of the worst

Winona deserved to win in 1994 my opinion. I really like the other actresses, but it was the best performance that year.

Great video. I think it would've been nice to include the Linda Fiorentino situation for 1994. She even made it at BAFTA (where Susan Sarandon won for The Client 😂)

I'm loving this series. Excellent analysis and superb arguments for what could've been the replacement nominees.

Cecilia Roth should have gotten a Best Actress nomination in 1999 for Todo Sobre Mi Madre! With her, Reese and Julia Stiles for 10 I Things I Hate About You, it would have been a fantastic, diverse lineup

One of the biggest slights in the 1990's was not nominating Pam Grier in '97 for Jackie Brown. The lineup for 1997 isn't bad, but I've never really understood Helen Hunt's appeal. In the 1990's, she would win Emmys year after year for Mad About You. Best Actress in a Comedy Series was trash throughout the 1990's because they kept nominating and handing out trophies to Candice Bergen (Murphy Brown) and Helen Hunt (Mad About You)  - they won 8 out of 10 years!  Anyways, I think Helen Hunt and Helena Bonham Carter could have been replaced by Grier. Such and outstanding performance and a HUGE miss by Academy ( the follow up film for Tarantino after Pulp Fiction and the industry was clutching their pearls and saying stuff like "her performance is too much like her blaxploitation films" and "QT is so violent..., but we'll pat Robert Forster on the back!"

Ingrid Bergman once said  maybe I was  nominated for the wrong movie

Winona Ryder should have won in 1994. The best version of Little Women  and she was AMAZING as Jo March.

As a Jessica Chastain fan, I’m relieved you didn’t put 2021 on here. 🙏😭 A lot of people dog on that performance, but I loved it. Also think Cruz, Colman, Stewart were deserved noms. Kidman in Ricardos is okay.

Election was such a cool film

The 1928-29 lineup with 6 performances and none of them good, while Louise Brooks did a spectacular turn in Pandora's Box and wasn't even nominated is just egregious. But then of course they weren't going to nominate a German film, especially one so scandalous.

Calling Julianne Moore’s performance in The End of the Affair as just okay is just plain criminal.

In 1994, Sigourney Weaver should have been nominated for The Death and the Maiden. Same for the amazing actress from Once Were Warriors, Rena Owens.

Ingrid Bergman’s daughter, Isabella Rossellini, said her mother liked to control her success. She wanted to win for For Whom the Bell Tolls. She didn’t think Casablanca was the prestige picture that the other was.

"For Whom the Bell Tolls" was prestige film making at that time.  Hemingway was so popular.  That attracts stars.
