Lore Horse - Basic Lore of 40K: Time and Setting ExplainedWelcome To Warhammer: Basic 40K Lore, Time...
If you enjoy Warhammer lore, give him a like and subscribe!
As we're getting ready to jump back into Warhammer 40K content on the gaming channel, we decided to start with a refresher on the basics of the universe.

This lore video by Lore Horse does an incredible job breaking down the timeline of humanity, the rise of the Emperor, the Great Crusade, and the events that ultimately led to the Emperor being placed upon the Golden Throne.

Even though we've explored 40K before, it was fascinating revisiting just how massive, dark, and complex this universe really is.

For Tasha, this was a great refresher course before diving deeper into the lore. For me, it was a reminder of why Warhammer 40K remains one of the most unique science-fiction settings ever created.

The scale of humanity's rise, the Emperor's vision, and the tragic fate that awaits mankind makes for one of the most compelling stories in all of fiction.

💬 QUESTION OF THE DAY:

If you could only introduce a new fan to ONE piece of Warhammer 40K lore, what would it be?

⚔️ The Horus Heresy
👑 The Emperor of Mankind
🧬 The Primarchs
😈 Chaos Gods
🚀 The Great Crusade

The important difference between Bricky's breakdown of the Warhammer 40K Universe and this more human centric 40,000 year history - Bricky was covering many millions of years that impacted the galaxy before humanity even existed, and what led up to the galaxy that Humanity expanded into.

He does mention The Rise of Humanity, and The Great Expansion - but from the perspective of the millions of years history. That is: a 20,000 yr period of rising to that greatness, then the period of collapse and what it became 20,000 yrs later.

That's 40,000 years 'not long after' the millions of years of war between the "gods", then the 5 million year period leading to the birth of Slaanesh, and downfall of the Eldar.

I'd liken it to The History of Humanity (about 1 million years) vs The History of Earth (about 4.5 billion years), or even The History of the USA vs The History of Humanity.

An interesting history to see a breakdown of, would be of the Tau - who's history is younger than some of the Human Dreadnaughts, which would be MUCH shorter than the history of Mankind.

16:38 "The Warp, itself, was suddenly thrown into total chaos, making travel or even communication between worlds impossible. Now WE know the reason for this..."

The narrator assumes the audience knows the reason, but not everyone watching may be aware. The reason the Warp failed was because the Chaos God, Slaanesh, was born. With its birth the galaxy was torn asunder by the Great Rift, the Eye of Terror; a 20,000 light year scar across the Milky Way where the Warp and real space intermingle.

Attending this cataclysm, Warp storms raged galaxy-wide for 5,000 years, making Warp travel and communication impossible. This effectively cut off all human worlds from one another, plunging humanity into a new Dark Age. Many worlds, formerly pinnacles of technological advancement, regressed to a state of medieval feudalism while others perished completely.

This was because not all worlds were self-sufficient. For example, some may have been rich in mineral wealth, becoming mining colonies. However, with no arable land, they relied upon deliveries of food stuffs from other worlds on a regular basis. With Warp travel ended, these colonies starved to death.

As one small example that illustrates the bigger picture of the disparity between humanity's Golden Age and the current Warhammer 40K setting, consider Terminator Armor. It is the most powerful assault armor available to the Space Marines, turning an Astartes into a walking tank; a pinnacle of military technology. To the people of the Golden Age it was used as a mining suit in hazardous environments, no more awe inspiring to them than a bulldozer would be to us.

Another example: An AI ship from the Golden Age got stuck in the Warp. When it re-emerged to real space, it found itself in the 40K setting (time works differently in the Warp). This AI gladly served its human crew, protecting and befriending them as companions. When the Captain of the ship set down on a nearby planet, he was executed as a heretic by the locals.

Space Marines and Tech Priests then boarded the AI vessel in orbit. The AI, enraged over what the locals had done to its friend, froze the Space Marines armor with a mere digital "thought" before eventually killing them inside their armor. It also delivered a scathing indictment of the Tech Priests as nothing better than superstitious shaman reciting incantations and burning incense. It then left, returning to the Warp, wanting nothing more to do with this era's humans.

Mind you, this was a mere small exploratory vessel from the Golden Age, yet was the superior of the largest, most powerful dreadnoughts the Imperium could field. It could have single-handedly defeated the Imperium if it was so inclined. It would have been unstoppable, shutting down every piece of technology in its path.

That's how far humanity has regressed.

The Thunder Warrior history is a bit simpler than most realise, like replicants in Bladerunner the Emperor didnt know how to make them functionally immortal like the Space Marines and chose to eliminate them than leave them to rot. One (possibly more) survived and lived inside the slums of Terra, using his own knowledge of biology to keep himself alive, playing a part in the Horus Heresy many centuries later

"Pirates are Evil? Marines are righteous? These terms have always changed throughout the course of history. Kid's who have never seen peace and kid's who have never seen war have different values!Those who stand at the top determine what's wrong and what's right! This very place is a neutral ground! Justice will prevail you say, of course it will. Those who win the war, become the Justice. " quote from Donquixote Doflamingo speech in One Piece pretty much sums up history. Those who win write what is history.

There is a great short story called the last Church, as the Emperor has banned religion of all forms, he sits with the last church on earth, having a conversation with the priest, where they sit down together, and share a bottle of wine having a discussion on the good and bad of religion. It's a fantastic story, and prophetic as the priest had warned him that denying man's right to worship and enforcing his own will would lead to failure, and seeing him worshiped as a god himself. Ultimately the priest was right. I don't want to spoil more, but it's a great read.
The emperor had a vision to lead mankind back to the stars and the galaxy, to accomplish that vision, and defend mankind he had to become a tyrant and dictator, after using the Thunder Warriors to conquer earth, he betrayed them (and arguably the right decision) wiping them out and replacing them with version 2.0 in physically less powerful but much more stable and controllable Space Marines. This was also referenced by Horus as one of the reasons he rebelled for fear of being obsolete. This ish is deep.

It's actually the original sci-fi story, and the one that Dune, Warhammer 40k, Star Wars, Star Trek etc. all take inspiration from

6:56 It's simple: for the Emperor to be restored, he must be removed from the throne. It's the Throne who prevents him from healing or dying and returning. But here's the problem: there's a bomb in his throne that will explode if the emperor gets up from it.

6:39 "How are they going to bring him back?"

A few theories have been floated by the fandom:

The Emperor Must Die So He Can Live
================================

The Emperor is a "Perpetual"; W40K's term for an immortal. But Perpetuals are the classic immortal of fantasy and sci-fi tropes on steroids (it IS Warhammer, after all)!

Unlike other franchises, W40K's immortals aren't simply beings who never age but can still be killed. No, no, no! Perpetuals embody their namesake; they ARE perpetual. When they're killed (by whatever means) they always manage to reconstitute themselves.

For example, Vulkan, Primarch of the Salamanders, has been killed in a multitude of ways, including falling into a reactor and essentially being vaporized/atomized. Yet every single time he returns to life somehow (though there may be long passages of time between a "death" and his reconstitution).

So the theory holds that the Emperor is being prevented by the Golden Throne from regenerating his injuries suffered in his fight with Horus. He's essentially on a life support system keeping him frozen in the state he was in when interred on the throne. It won't let him "die" so he can reconstitute back to full strength.

Why didn't the Primarchs and Custodes entrusted with putting the Emperor on the Golden Throne just let him die so he could reconstitute? Because (A) he ordered them to put him on the throne and a Custodes would never disobey the Emperor's orders and (B) the necessity of maintaining the continuity of the Astronomican.

The Astronomican is the psychic beacon projected by the Emperor into the Warp and The Golden Throne acts as a psychic amplifier, making the Astronomican all that much stronger. Without it, the Imperium's Navigators would find it difficult or even impossible to successfully navigate the Immaterium. And, in an empire of a million worlds with millions of ships transiting the Warp at any given hour, the loss of that psychic beacon for even a moment would spell disaster for the Empire.

It's why Malcador had to sit on the Golden Throne in the Emperor's absence when the latter left to fight Horus aboard his flagship; someone had to keep the Astronomican active. It's a lighthouse bulb that - once turned on - can never be turned off due to how critical it is for ensuring safe and reliable Warp travel within the Imperium.

Thus, so the theory goes, one way for the Emperor to return would be to disconnect him from the Golden Throne, allowing him to "die" and be "reborn", fully healed. But what might the consequences be for the wider Imperium...?

Deal With The Devil
================

The Haemonculi coven of the Drukhari are master geneticists and flesh-weavers. They've so perfected their dark art and science that they can even "resurrect" the dead from just a tiny bit of flesh (technically they're cloning the individual; said clone then having the memories and personality of their original restored, as well). It's how the Drukhari avoid permanent death and their souls consumed by Slaanesh; but only if they can pay the Haemonculi's price!

The Custodes have noticed the Golden Throne is starting to slowly fail after 10,000 years. As they are charged with protecting the Emperor at all costs, they can not let him die. They are scrambling to figure out a solution. Some are even willing to consider the heretical act of making a deal with the Haemonculi to somehow keep the Emperor alive or even restore him to his former glory.

But what might the Haemonculi want in return and would the Emperor still be the same man after being touched by the corrupting hand of the Drukhari...?

Transcendence
============

Faith and prayer empower Warp-entities; it's why the Chaos Gods are as powerful as they are. The Emperor, too, has grown ever-more powerful (psychically speaking; physically, he remains a near-corpse on the Golden Throne's life support system) over the last 10,000 years due to him being worshiped as a god by trillions of humans across the Imperium.

One theory holds the Emperor is on the verge of transcending to become a new Warp God: the God of Order to counter the Chaos Gods. If this happens, it may well see him physically restored to full health, as well, or even no longer requiring a physical body. But what will this mean for the Imperium? Freed from the Golden Throne, what will happen to the Astronomican? Will the Emperor even care or will such petty concerns be beneath the consideration of a god...?
