Today I dive into English singer/actor David Bowie. "Space Oddity" is the lead single from his self-titled second studio album, originally released in the UK on 14 November 1969. It is a tale about fictional astronaut Major Tom. Its title and subject matter were partly inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey.

It still seems ethereal and strange even now. Testament to David Bowie's genius. A true artist.

A song about a human being, lost in space to death is huge, and an amazing piece Music is art, and this is a perfect view of it.

Thank you for reacting to this. I have had this song in my life since the early seventies and I still love hearing it. RIP David.

The lyric you recognized is probably from "Major Tom (Coming Home)" by Peter Schilling - a 1983 new wave hit that was a tribute to this song. Also subjectively adjacent to "Ashes to Ashes". And let's not forget that Pet Shop Boys teamed up with Bowie for "Hallo Spaceboy" much later.

Such an iconic song, again surprised you haven't heard this one. I've always gotten a Beatles' sound as well from this one. Also there's a part where a sax I think begins then stops that I get careless whisper feels from, just after the accoustic change up going into the chaotic bleeps.
I probably know early Bowie more than his later stuff. He does have distinct sound periods where he also changes his persona, this is his Ziggy period.

I think this was the first Bowie song I heard and I was hooked from that moment. He was so different to everything else I knew at the time. Ziggy and Aladdin Sane were the soundtrack of my early teens, opening my mind to strange worlds, strange words and amazing sounds. I loved his work up to 'Heroes' in 1977 then I largely lost interest as it all became a bit too 'normal' lol. I should visit his later stuff really.

Nice to see your reaction. As you know there are better Bowie songs, but I'm still glad that you know this one.

I am sick to death of Americans listening to UK performers they've never heard before and saying "It reminds me of a Beatles song". Whatever the merits of 'The Beatles', it's insulting to any other British performer to insinuate that they all owe everything to 'The Beatles'.
That Michael Jackson eh? That Eminem? That Madonna? Don't they all remind you of Elvis Presley?
