Kneel beside her among the red maples. The basket is still empty, and the whole autumn day lies ahead.

Deep in an old forest, every maple has turned crimson and rust, and the morning mist still hangs low between the trunks. A thatched cottage stands at the edge of the wood. Along the moss path grow rosehips, thyme, yarrow and elderberries, and in a small clearing a ring of mushrooms has come up overnight. A young witch in a tall brown hat kneels among the fallen leaves with a wicker basket, her black cat waiting on a fallen log nearby.

Nothing here is in a hurry. The leaves come down one at a time, and the basket fills a little more with every hour.

πŸ“– Story

The adventurer was handed an empty basket at the cottage door, with mist still lying in the maple wood.

"Herb day," the witch said, pulling the door shut behind her. "The last good one before the frost. We'll be out until the light goes."

They went out through the herb garden gate and down a path soft with moss and fallen leaves. The black cat walked ahead and waited on a fallen log. By an old stone wall the witch picked rosehips, bright as little lanterns, and left plenty for the birds. She stepped carefully around a ring of mushrooms. "Not for us," she said. "That one belongs to someone else."

Thyme grew between the stones, yarrow stood white in the clearing, and inside a hollow oak she kept a small jar of last year's seeds. At midday they sat beneath the maples and shared a flask of tea as the leaves drifted down.

In the afternoon sun they found elderberries, dark and heavy on the branch. On an old stump the witch sorted everything into piles, one for tea, one for winter coughs, one for drying, and tied each bundle with twine. Passing a standing stone, she touched it lightly, like greeting an old friend. Then they took the long way home as the sunset turned the forest to embers.

At the cottage, the bundles went up to hang from the rafters. The witch ground dried leaves with a mortar and pestle, and a kettle of herbal tea began to sing on the hearth. The cat settled by the drying rack and would not be moved.

By lamplight she wrote the day into her herb book: what they had found, and what to leave for next year. Outside the window, the moon rose over the red forest.

The adventurer had only meant to carry the basket. But there were still seeds to sort, the tea was still warm, and a day like this was worth staying for.

🎡 ABOUT THIS MUSIC

Over an hour of gentle medieval fantasy music for one slow autumn day of herb gathering in a red maple forest β€” Celtic harp, breathy low whistle and wooden flute, viola and nyckelharpa, fingerpicked lute and warm cello. The pieces are calm and softly layered: flowing melodies with a warm low line beneath them, two or three instruments weaving together without ever growing loud. Each one runs into the next without a gap, and the picture changes with every piece.
