Stand with her in the open doorway. Across the golden meadow, the old stones on the hill are waiting for tonight.

It is the last day of October: Samhain eve, the old Celtic festival that Halloween grew from. A thatched stone cottage sits at the edge of a quiet meadow, with drystone walls across the faded grass and an ancient stone circle on the hill beyond. Inside: a basket of late apples, herbs drying from the beams, a lantern not yet lit. A young witch in a brown pointed hat stands at the door in the late-afternoon light, and her black cat is never far away.

Nothing here is frightening. It is a slow, golden day of small preparations, and the long night ahead is one to welcome.

πŸ“– Story

The adventurer arrived just as the witch opened the cottage door. Mist still lay over the meadow.

"Samhain eve," she said, and handed over a broom. "Tonight the old year ends. There's plenty to do before dark, and none of it is hard."

First came the morning chores: herbs hung by the wall, the yard swept, the black cat watching from the doorstep as if it were in charge. Then they followed the old wall to the last apple tree and filled a basket with late apples, small and sweet. One was left on the windowsill, for anyone passing in the night.

Inside, the witch opened an old book and read back through the year: what had grown, what had been shared, and what was still owed to the land. She swept the hearth clean and laid a new fire. At the end of the garden they gathered the last herbs before the frost.

In the golden hour the whole meadow glowed. The adventurer rested on the cottage step while the witch slowly carved a turnip lantern with a friendly face. Bread went into the oven for the Samhain table, and candles were set in the windows for the long night. The kettle of herbal tea began to sing, and the cat curled up by the hearth and would not be moved.

In the last light of October, they went out through the meadow gate and up to the stone circle on the hill. The witch set apples at the foot of the oldest stone and stood quietly for a while. "This is when the veil grows thin," she said. "Nothing to be afraid of. It only means we remember."

They watched the sun go down behind the stones, gold turning to amber, then to a soft grey dusk. On the way back, the turnip lantern was already glowing in the window.

The adventurer had only come to help with the apples. But the bread was warm, the candles were lit, and a night like this was worth staying for.

🎡 ABOUT THIS MUSIC

Over an hour of gentle medieval fantasy music for one quiet Samhain eve at a witch's cottage β€” Celtic harp, breathy low whistle and wooden flute, viola and nyckelharpa, fingerpicked lute and warm cello. The pieces are calm and softly layered: flowing melodies with a warm low line beneath them, two or three instruments weaving together without ever growing loud. Each one runs into the next without a gap, and the picture changes with every piece.
