This game was over-hated because of Sony's recent decisions, I wholeheartedly believe that. This is not only a "not bad" game, it was fun as hell. The story was very good, but I agree with what you said about it's shortcomings. I don't even think you can categorize those labeling Logan as "soft" in this game as hardcores because they quite obviously don't know the character. I'm not a Wolverine expert either, but I knew this side is ALWAYS present, they just watched Hugh Jackman shorts. Even the lastest Deadpool and Wolverine very much showed this side of him 😂. He isn't a mindless barbarian, and, in fact, that's very much what he fights against being. The combat is fun, but I'll also say there could've been more varied combos, and the envrioment could've been more interactive/destructible. The most ridiculous critque I've seen is in regards to "it plays itself" short motorcycle intermission, and how you can only die if you actually play it instead of letting go of the controls... yeah, the devs expect you to play it, what a concept!!  Making a Wolverine game an open-world game would make sense how? Wolverine doesn't do petty crime. What would you fill it with? X-Men take on missions around the globe. But these same people argue about getting "taken out" of the story with the nightmare trials... play those gaunlets to their ends and tell me the combat is easy😂. And visual navigation ques have been a thing in action/adventure games for decades, not even worth addressing. Was this the absolute PEAK of what you could've done with Wolverine? Of course not. It has its shortcomings, but it's a fun as hell, well made superhero game. 8.5/10 for me.
