Hearing an American be shocked by things as normal as it is in this video to a Swede, makes me terrified by how it would actually be to be a student in America.

To me that looked just like normal Nordic school.

Imagine having your taxes actually go to something other than outfitting your president with diapers... or else being pocketed by elected officials.

Yeh, I'd say it's a pretty standard Swedish high school. 😂
Also, Uni is free. Just need the grades to get in.

6:13 Because there would probably be a riot if there wasn't coffee in the theacher's room.

He wasn't saying you have to go to college because of some economic pressure of familial expectation.

He was saying that he was attending a natural sciences focused high school program, he got the follow up question what he was hoping that education would let him work with and he said engineering, you need to go to college after. In Sweden you choose your high school program to either prepare you for a profession such and construction, service or mechanics or one that prepares you for university such as natural or social sciences.

Now most people do go to college.

But he was saying that he has to because he had chosen that program. Not that he has to because he would be looked down on if he'd chosen a trade program.

In Sweden, you apply to college in your last year, so the students in the video are probably around the age of 18-19.

They were going to graduate, so they were 18-19. Also you can't have a driving license in Sweden until 18.
We start school at 6 years old and finish compulsory school at age 15 after grade 9 (after 10 years in school). You have to attend these years in school by law. Home schooling is not allowed. When we are 16-19 years old we go 3 years of "high school" called Gymnasiet before we graduate. This was filmed the last year in Gymnasiet. You chose Gymnasiet depending on what type of orientation they have, a bit more similar to USAmerican Collage.

The guy that said he had to go to university didn't say that due to social or parental pressure. Sure there can be some of that but mainly he said it because of what he was studying. He was doing a course that is very broad towards natural sciences. Rather then something that is more specialised towards a certain career. So it is more general and it would be hard then to get a specific job. So he is supposed to go to university to continue the education and specialise in whatever he decides.

If a young person just wants a job there is educations for their specific trade on this level of school as well - these youngsters was on a cource that didnt give them a degree in any form - it was a preparatory cource in science that is supposed to be followed by a university level where your career is started. Hence the expression "I have to go to university!!

Swedish life is much less a competition than life in the USA. You just enjoy your time, and work to support it. Do your best, but avoid comparing yourself to others. There are margins. You can be yourself.

I think those dark "square" hats are pretty universal in the anglo-saxon cultural sphere.
But us Scandinavians have a different tradition (and so does the Germans, Dutch, French, etc.)

also the glasses is tap water beacuse the water in europe is actually realy clean :))))))

This is as average as a Swedish school can be. I'm 58, from a small town of 10 000 ppl, but it's the same. The Swedish school system hasn't changed much the last 4 decades. First time I visited my own school was when my own kids went there, and everything was the same :) , except for an extension made to get some more class rooms. This is what you get for paying higher taxes. Good mandatory education for all, and free higher education for everyone who want's to study. This, ''free'' healthcare, very long paid parental leave, 6 weeks of paid vacation every year, social welfare system and retirement payout for everyone. This and pretty healthy food is what our socialist system gives us, all from high taxes and a regulated work/employer environment. Still, you can get rich beyond belief, but you won't get in financial hell because of a visit to the doctor, or get in between jobs now and then, or have to leave your child away for the first year when parents form their bond with their kid. I never understood why anyone think the U.S. is better. Just about everything is worse, unless you're born with money.

According to Lars Kaggs schools own webpage it is one of the upper secondary schools in the Kalmarsund upper secondary school association.
The school has approximately 1,300 students and 150 employees.
There are both vocational and university preparatory programs.

If a public school in Sweden looked like "some" I'v seen in US when I visited 8 years ago, it'd be closed down for so many reasons, and there'd be fines on the local municipality, and people in charge fired.

Basically at the age of 15 (For some 16) you choose a program in Sweden unlike in US,  it's sort of a early stage program similar to what you might choose in University, BUT often a bit more broader,   Science program,  social sciences program, Aesthetic program (Art/Music/Film/Other), and a few more like these programs.
BUT some of the programs are not university aimed, but rather actual work tied,  like there's an electrician program, Nurse assistent program, Car mechanic program, Builders program (Includes working construction / painters / fine wood works), Animal programs (Often for pre vet or farms),  there are Sports programs and many other.

Like mentioned above, some are aimed at further studies, and do not leave you with any real professions, but a head start towards certain University programs, While others basically give you a job title when done with no further University need.
Then there are those programs in between!  Like the Nurse Assistent program is often taken by those that later want to study to become a full nurse too, but not Doctors, they typically should go with Science program and if they have it, with a sub focus on Biology and such.

This period of Swedish School is not called High school or such, it's called "Gymnasiet" and it's 3 years, typically 15-18(19).
During this School you have standard courses in all the major subjects as well, that make up like 60% of your school classes,  but the remaining 40% is tailored towards your program!

Like if you do Science, you will have courses in Social sciences too, but a lot fewer and more basic, maybe only the first year too,  But will have multiple courses in traditional Science, you will study Phyhsics, Biology, Kemistri & Engineering as seperate courses at 15 already, and you will study Math more, like 2-3 times as much.

Meanwhile Social Sciences program will make you at 15 already have courses in Law, Politics, Social wellfare, Goverment and local administration systems, Psychology and more,  But meanwhile simplify science to 1 broader course, and less math,   (Although, there are sub versions of Social Science programs that focus on Economy, starting business, those will have a bit more math).

It is just same at schools with 1000+ students and kids .. Nothing to do with size.

17:50 This is outside Lars Kaggskolan in Kalmar. The tower is often called the old naval command tower and was built to replace the former navigation school and was used for many years for training naval officers.
Today it houses other activities, including a gym (Fitness Center).

Math really is a universal language. When I took Fourier Analysis at university we got a sheet with a glossary for terms we needed to know in english, russian, french, spanish, latin, and esperanto (I'm missing one, swedish?). Then we were informed that the lectures would be randomly held in one of those languages and it shouldn't matter that much to us because the math would be on the white board.
It seemed crazy at first but it 100% worked out. Most memorable class I took.

as someone who lives in sweden i actually rlly love the schools here

This made me feel so nostalgic! 😍
