Botticelli was a genius, and not owned by the church, his work stands out among many other genii. When i studied Renaissance art, this painting hit me so completely, fully rich in every way, that a good sized copy on board hung above my bed. Thank you *
I think the meadow may actually be more interesting than the figures. Once you start looking at the individual plants, the gods almost become the background.
Thank you so much for this excellent analysis of the entire work and, as you say, the botanical research carried out by plant experts is wonderful. I hope the carpet of plants is finally recognised by as many visitors as possible for the wonder it truly is!
This has always been one of my favorite paintings. Your explanation of the flowers has made me appreciate it even more. BTW This painting was the inspiration for the flowers on Queen (then Princess) Elizabeth's wedding dress.
I stood in front of it in 2014 and was too overwhelmed and too inadequate to understand it fully. Truly one of the greatest paintings! His rendering of Simonetta Vespucci as Flora is beautiful and so complex.
The absorbing narration considerably enhances the beauty of the painting. Amazing to see that the maestro has keen, observant eyes and mythological knowledge. His magnum opus is full of life.
This is a lovely appreciation of one of my favorite paintings, but orange trees often flower and fruit at the same time so this does not necessarily represent two seasons.
I wish I had seen this last year. I was at the Uffizi Gallery and saw the painting. I was with two botanists. They would have loved it. Have to go back.
A LOT of artists in this century painted plants and flowers with amazing accuracy. Ditto, the tapestries. The overlords back then loved gardens! Wanted artists to render these plants!!!
