Hugo Weaving's performance as Smith is an absolute master class and I get chills every time I listen to his monologue about purpose. The way he delivers his lines makes you hang on to the very last utterance.

Imagine if this was a horror movie, Smith would be a genuinely chilling and subtly terrifying stalker. 🥶

I think what happened was Smith assumed that with autonomy plus removing the constraints of purpose that he would then become all capable, essentially a godhead. He equated purpose with being bounded, exactly how a program is bound to their source code.

The real question is who would gain the most out of this specific outcome humans or the Machines and the answer is definitely Machines because not only Machines would have gotten rid of a systemic level threat without lifting a finger, they would have still remained the default superior species and humans would have been still at their mercy no matter what, and who orchestrated this result but one of their own programs in the form of the Oracle. But if Neo let Smith win all Machines would have been wiped out, and maybe humanity along with it but real lasting peace would have been achieved. Fragile continuity or lasting peace - the choice should have been clear but we all know what Neo did don't we?

To me, at the end of Revolutions, Smith has become the personification of Nihilism

Smith likely would have killed all humans to get rid of what he hates. He would overwrite every program he could and conquer the entire machine world if he could as well. He might either try to continue his existence indefinitely though whatever means he could such as machines and simulations and to make the machines energy independent and capable of eventually leaving earth, as earth will likely eventually be destroyed or rendered uninhabitable even for machines. Or Smith could see his purpose as fulfilled if he destroyed humanity and conquered the machines, then he could simply shut himself off.
