My older brother was in her class in high school and she lived just down the street from us. We all became musicians. Little did we know she would become world famous!
The great Larry Carlton on guitar before he played those incredibly leads for Steely Dan. This album, Joni was beginning to write sus chords and began hiring jazz musicians to read/play her more complex music. Additionally, she also painted many of her album covers and frequently used artistic metaphors in her lyrics.
This was the one ( the album, Court and Spark) I played on my turntable quite often. She went from a nice folk feel to a more moving rocking jazz like feel. AND her lyrics and singing honestly allowed her feelings be openly exposed. Take in the whole of the album. You won’t regret it!
Masterpiece of an album… fusion of jazz and pop music layered behind Joni’s unsurpassable, and introspective lyrics. Just one of her many standout albums win the development of her music journey..
She came up with over 50 custom guitar tunings, which made playing her songs live easier. She started out folky, and gradually incorporated more jazz in her music - recording and touring with jazz artists like Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorious, Michael Brecker. Now 82, she has made a remarkable recovery from a 2015 brain aneurysm. She also did the cover paintings for 12 of her albums.
Joni is one of one. Poet. Artist. Musican. Constantly shifting, pushing, searching. She is the best. Folk, jazz, rock, ensemble, avant guard... she did it all with incredible drive to avoid conventions. Keep going with Joni. She's sometimes challenging, but she does not miss.
I’m 72 years old, and there have been very few artists in my lifetime who I would classify as being geniuses. Joni is one of them. Maybe the best of them. I grew with her as she expanded my musical horizons beyond folk and rock into jazz and her unique stylistic fusions.
Yeah, Erica... she has all the standard attributes like beauty, etc. But in my mind it's the writing, the composition, the beautiful guitar chords and changes... and her melodies and vocals! ;-)
"Didn't it feel good when we were sittin there talkin, or lying there not talkin didn't it feel good? You danced with a lady with a hole in her stockings...didn't it feel good, didn't it feel good?" Has a moment of unforced, relaxed, joyous and spontaneous intimacy ever been described more perfectly? As if it was written without any worldly intrusion. No expectations, no pride or urge to impress. Lyrics directly from the heart.
Folk-based, Joni has a jazzy approach that is cool and unique. She still gets the hooks that grab you, but unexpectedly......just as her lyrics often do. Love it. An epic songwriter and performer.
