There's always something so interesting about hearing the history of everyday things people take for granted

Baseball started using clear visual hand signals for umpires early on because of a deaf player in the late 1800's

Puts the bullying of referees at lower levels of the sport in greater context.

Lets be honest, trying war criminals in a court room where everyone is on your side except maybe two people would be nothing compared to having 60,000 fans wanting to rush the field and stomp you out.

If the ref gives you a green card, it means he really likes what you're doing and you should continue.

I was quite taken aback when you said that the cards were introduced during the 1970 World Cup because I was sure I had sat as a 12 year old with my father watching the 1974 World Cup on TV hearing a commentator say something like, "that's the first time a red card has been shown at a World Cup"

Then you confirmed that no red cards had been shown in 1970 and my memories and the real world were synchronised once again. 🙂

Mocking a country infrastructure after the worlds worst earthquake is like mocking a crippled child and not expect the parent to be mad at you,... sad thing the players and fans suffered the consequences

The battle of Santiago…. We still talk about it in Chile.

That journalist should be ashamed of himself. He turned his countrymen into targets of rage that should have all been directed at him.

Now talk about how one German, Walter Frosch, forced the creation of the "suspension for multiple yellow cards" rule.

5:30 Considering how earthquake prone is Italy (and how hundreds of people have died from them just during the last couple of decades), that's was a pretty ballsy things to say for italians journalists.

Have very minimal interest in football but this was so interesting and actually made me very emotional. I enjoyed that you included the contribution from both Ken and Hilda Aston

A true innovator's journey narrated by a master storyteller

“Never profited off the invention”

I mean I’m pretty sure it had to have played a roll in him getting promoted to the head of FIFA officiating so…

I'm old enough to remember the days before Refs had the little bottle of spray foam that marks the positions for the ball and the wall in free kicks. For those who don't remember, you would not believe how much nonsense there used to be as players tried to creep forward, or move the ball, or fail to stand in a straight line. It was silly at best, and at worst it seriously delayed the game. Then somebody (Italians iirc edit: apparently Brazilians?) came up with the foam and it was instantly fixed.

I had no idea; like you said, I just assumed it was (almost) always there

Congratulations for your way of telling stories. I'm Italian and I already knew about Aston, the Santiago battle and that it was him who had the idea of the yellow and red cards seeing a traffic light. But I didn't know certain details, i.e. the date when all of this happened, the exact intersection and that the final idea belonged to Aston's wife. What a research! Thank you.

I haven't done sports since school, I don't keep up with any of them, and very rarely do I play any now, but your videos and storytelling are incredible! I think I've watched all of them at this point, and I hope you keep making more :)

First English Football League Red Card: David Wagstaffe (Blackburn Rovers) vs. Leyton Orient on October 2, 1976.

Thank god - a real person talking on YouTube.
