"Megitsune" was released in June 2013. Suzuka was 15 while Yui and Moa were both 13 (about to turn 14). They started in 2010 being 12 and 11yo.

Great reaction - and I see nothing wrong with reacting to the music videos to get an idea of the song and then follow those with the live to hear how it should sound.
This song is possibly the one that best represents BABYMETAL. This video was filmed a little over 12 years ago in 2013, so Su was 15, Yui and Moa both 13, nearly 14.
Yui left in Oct 2018 after a 12 month absence because of her poor health. Momometal became the new third member nearly 5 years later in April 2023. That is the only change there has been.
'Megitsune' is a big fan favourite, often coming top in fan polls and. until very recently, was the song they had played live more times than any other. It is also arguably the song that showcases better than most what BABYMETAL are about and one that truly reflects their Japanese culture the best starting with the traditional instruments (shamisen or koto, you decide which) in the intro and the lyrics about women being compared to foxes (kitsune - which also explains all the fox masks in the video) which, in Japanese mythology, are able to shape shift and take human form in order to deceive.
It is also a bit of a push back against the traditional subservient female role in Japanese society, saying that is changing I think - or maybe it is - whilst also praising and celebrating the women who have played that role over the years for their strength.
They are saying that women wearing their make up and hiding their true feelings ("crying at heart, smiling at face") are not trying to deceive anybody, they are simply trying to please everybody - so they are not deceptive kitsune (foxes), they are pure hearted megitsune (female foxes or vixens) - and they are strong.

When Su pulled out the tanto (short blade) from her microphone she said "Otome wa ... nametara ikan zeyo." (Maidens ... shouldn't be underestimated). The last part of this is a famous quote from a Japanese gangster movie said by the daughter of a gang boss.
Much of the video was shot on location at the Asagaya Shinmei Shrine in Tokyo. This has become a place of pilgrimage for BABYMETAL fans visiting Tokyo. The guys at the back waving the traditional instruments about were dancers with the lady who did the fan dance's troupe.
You will only hear their live backing band (the Kami Band) in live performance, they do not record the studio versions, those are done by studio session musicians.
The Kami Band of the East (Japanese musicians) first appeared in Oct 2012 and became the full time support, after 18 months being phased in playing only encores in some shows, in March 2014. They last appeared in Jan 2023.
The Kami Band of the West (American musicians) first appeared in 2019 and have been ever present since April 2023.
BABYMETAL have had mostly the same song writers ever since they started in 2010 (when they were aged 12 and 11) and their producer Kobametal, as well as being one of the writers, has had a big hand in all of the songs.

This video was filmed in 2013, so Su-metal (the lead vocalist) was 15, while Yuimetal and Moametal (backing vocalists and dancers) were 13. The group started in 2010 when Su was 12 and Yui and Moa were 11, so there were very young when they started. 2025 is the fifteenth anniversary of Babymetal and they are celebrating with the release of their fifth studio album and playing major arena shows at London's O2 Arena, Intuit Dome in LA, and Saitama Super Arena in Tokyo.

This MV was recorded in 2013, so the youger girls were 14 (both were born in 1999), and the main vocalist 15 (she was born in december 1997, she is the "legend of 1997", you will discover what I mean if you continue to react to these girls)

You need to see the video for Headbanger. That was the video that, to me, really told me the tale of who they were. The imagery in the video was great. That neckbrace just freaking killed me, but it was just like "ok, I get it now. I understand this band."

Nothing wrong with watching the music video first! This way you get to see them grow up, sort of. Seeing how much butt they kicked when they were this young will make you appreciate even more how powerful they've become as grown ups now! ❤❤

BabyMetal is an atypical heavy metal group, because they are idols. In Japan, idols are often paired with pop music (Jpop), and Babymetal was actually a subgroup of a larger idol group called Sakura Gakuin. Sakura was made up of girls between 10 and 15 years old dedicated to Jpop. When Su-Metal (the singer) started she was 12 years old and MoaMetal/YuiMetal (the backup singers) were only 11 years old. Sakura represented the Japanese high school and the girls were distributed in clubs (traditional Japanese extracurricular activities such as cooking, swimming, basketball, sewing, etc.). One of the producers, a lover of heavy metal, saw that Su's singing could perfectly be used in metal and asked permission from the Mother House (Amuse) to create the heavy music club, proposing an experiment in fusion between metal and the pop. Nobody, as they themselves have confessed, had much hope for its outcome, but they gave it the green light and thus BabyMetal, Sakura Gakuin's heavy music club, was born. The first songs were intended for girls between 10 and 15 years old, who were Sakura's target audience. However, their quality and the fusion between pop and metal attracted attention beyond this audience and they began to frequent their metal concerts... a shocking audience of children and metalheads. And it worked, it worked so well that they began to support groups like Metallica, Red Hot, BMTH or Lady Gaga, I seem to remember, on their tours in Japan. And the Red Hot singer commented that he was impressed to realize that part of the public came to see at girls, not them. And so the base of BabyMetal fans grew. Sakura was a group in which, upon turning 15, the members had to leave (to pursue their careers elsewhere) and the producer (KobaMetal) requested permission again to create BabyMetal as an independent group. Success was already beginning to become a reality in Asia, so they authorized it, although Moa and Yui (they were still 13 years old) would also continue to be part of other Sakura clubs (I don't know when the poor girls studied, but they did).
In 2014 a milestone would arrive in the group's history. They were already an established metal group in Asia that sold out concerts, but they had not yet made the leap to the West. In that year his song "Gimme Chocolate" rose to fame on YouTube (currently 208M views) and attracted the attention of the producers of the Sonisphere festival. KobaMetal had doubts about taking the step, since their musical proposal (Kawaii Metal or Cute Metal, a genre of which they are considered creators) might not be accepted in the West and the metalheads who went to the Sonisphere had a reputation for saying goodbye to very bad manners to the artists they didn't like (even with bottles full of urine), but they were offered to go to one of the secondary stages (about 5000 spectators) and they ended up accepting. コメントにもありますが、童謡「さくらさくら」をアレンジしています。BMの曲で「iine」のラップパートの後のギターセクションには、童謡「黄金虫」のアレンジが入っています。BMの曲には日本の伝統文化が盛り込まれていますので、日本人ならばすぐに気付きます。豆知識でした。良いベビーメタルの旅を・・・。

The lyrics of “Megitsune” are rooted in Japanese folklore. With that in mind, it’s clear that the song was crafted with a deep awareness of Japanese aesthetics. At the heart of this cultural sensibility lies the concept of karumi—a graceful lightness that stands in stark contrast to the Western emphasis on artistic weight and gravitas. BABYMETAL brilliantly fuses these opposing cultural values, and their expressive power is truly striking.

Welcome back to the foxhole and I’m so pleased that you are enjoying my favourite band. I’m a 54 year old bloke from Australia that was so tired of my music playlist that when I discovered BM, they brought excitement and joy back to music for me. I started from their back catalogue first so it felt like I went through the journey with them and watched these ladies grow up. Now that they are grown women, I feel like a proud Uncle for some reason. There are so many reasons to love BM, and most are already noted in other comments but I love their positivity and the fact that they are never sexualised at all. They’re not exposing themselves, nor is their choreography suggestive and I absolutely love that. Don’t think I’m a prude, but I’m just pleased that their producers and handlers did not exploit them in that sense. Kitsune Up!!

Awesome reaction!! Nothing wrong with doing MVs, but you’ll understand why everyone clamors for Babymetal live soon enough. They are 100%, by design, a live performance band. Everything is made for the live.

I love this song and this music video, it was the first MV of Babymetals that I watched. It is also IMO well worth watching some of the music video and especially if you pair it with the live performance. The live performance of Megitsune is fantastic and if you are there the crowd experience is amazing.
"Headbanger" MV, "Karate" MV, "Iine" MV and "Doki Doki" Morning MV are all worth watching for the history, lore and to see the young women/girls at the time. All these of course are also excellent live but your journey you should take it however you want to.
