Brno, May 31, 1945: Around 27,000 people are driven out of the city on foot. Seven years earlier, people in Bohemia had cheered "Home to the Reich!" Between these two events lies one of Europe's darkest stories – and it is not as simple as both sides like to portray it.

For 800 years, Germans lived in Bohemia and Moravia. In 1945/46, around three million lost their homeland. In Bavaria, they are still referred to as the "fourth tribe." We tell the whole story: the invitation in the Middle Ages, March 4, 1919, Henlein and the Munich Agreement, the first expulsion in 1938, Lidice, the Brno death march, Postelberg and Ústí nad Labem, the Beneš Decrees – and the reconciliation leading up to the first Sudeten German Day in Brno in 2026. With a fact check: Which figures are accurate, which are myth?

Perpetrators, victims – or both? Did your family come from Bohemia or Moravia? Write the place in the comments.
