That transparent yellow command wheel NEEDS special Dual grease. The original Dual grease however gets sticky over time or simply degrades rapidly if exposed to cigarette smoke. Like the entire mechanism as a matter of fact. What I do, not being able to get the original grease, is apply silicon grease instead. That works fine and I think even better than the original grease.
This turntable is complicated, every Dual changer is. It dates from an era Germany made exceptional high quality products. This fine equipment comes from the Schwartzwald area, traditionally known for fine mechanical products of all sorts. A masterpiece. Does that make this turntable the best turntable? No, of course not. The best had yet to come, the Dual 701. The first direct drive top of the line turntable Dual has ever made.
Oh, just a little advice. Give the platter a little spin prior to starting it with the lever. This will take away a lot of friction on the rubber idler wheel avoiding dents on the surface of the wheel. A dent immediately is noticed by audible rumble. Do not spin the platter too fast! And the motor, just leave it. If taken apart and servicing it, putting it back together often seems to go well only to find out the motor now is very noisy. I have a beaten up one here for parts that has a perfect motor. It has not been taken apart, never seen a drop of oil either and it still runs noise free. Greetings from Holland, bye, Willem.
