Today we'll be looking at restoring a German made Dual 1229 turntable. We started out with a used and abused unit. Once we found out that it has too many things wrong with it, we ordered a new chassis that was - unfortunately - damaged during shipping. Another round of parts ordered: tonearm, tonearm lift, various levers, a wood plinth, and its running good as new.

What a relief ! You're the first person i've seen to open the motor by separating the housing halves with small impulses. In every other video I've seen, they tap the motor shaft with a hammer, which means a direct hit on the thrust bearing !
You also perform the other work very neatly, which I like.

Bought a 1229 yesterday. I did a full service today, and just the antiskating plate was broken, I cast a new one with epoxy and micro fibres.
The player is now up and working 100%.
Great German quality working perfectly after 50 years.

You need to take apart the oil reservoirs for both motor bearings and replace the material that holds the oil for the bearings. That is the proper method. You have to drill out the rivets and then replace them when reassembled.

Dual are so well built, they could survive 5 nuclear bombs. I have just restored mine that a friend gave me (1009). The motor was making a weird noise after 20 minutes of play. So I opened it and cleaned and lubricated the bearings/bushings with 3 in 1 oil, now everything is silent and perfect. I turn the platter with my hands before starting the motor, just so it does not work too hard.

Thanks so much for making this video! Would you happen to be able to get clear video on how to remove the platter? I cannot for the life of me find the infamous C ring (and how to get it out without scratching that area).

I've got a Dual 1229 I bought new many years ago. I've rebuilt the motor, cleaned all the moving parts and regreased them and it's operating perfectly but it has developed a hum and I just can't make it go away even though I feel it's properly grounded. Any suggestions?

Great video, but 6 commercials YouTube puts in , not sure why, this was never done before. FYI, I have never been influenced by any YT commercials to buy any products, so this is a major waste of ad dollars.
