This customer dropped off his 2018 Toyota Hilux after the clutch had started failing, so it was time to pull everything apart and get it sorted.

In this video, I take you through the entire clutch replacement from start to finish — removing the gearbox, pulling out the old clutch and flywheel, replacing the spigot bearing and working through everything required to get the Hilux back together and driving properly again.

Along the way, I'll show you some of the tips and tricks I've learnt, what to look out for during the job, the removal and installation process, and hopefully give you a better understanding of what's actually involved in replacing a clutch on one of these Toyota Hiluxes.

Grand job on your own Andrew, in my younger days I used to do heaps just to put food on the table and pay the mortgage. In later years when I worked for private shops and dealers, I always insisted two blokes doing it just to save your nerves even if the helper was maybe a junior guy it helped having those extra pair of hands and taught the young guy something. The last one I did was back in 2005 on a Jackaroo 4JX1 not the easiest job and I was already well into my 50's No hoist just the good old concrete floor some solid jacks and stands and my son (who is also a mechanic) to help, sure brought back old memories none of them good 😂

Replaced a few clutches myself, but last one was a Landcruiser 30 years ago. Very happy to never do one again and full respect for your work - you do it right first time. On the landcruisers back then, it was also common to put a smear of grease on the face of the throwout bearing and fingers of the diaphragm spring to stop "the little bird cheeping" because the clutch has no freeplay and the bearing rests on the diaphragm spring when not engaged.

I’ve changed 2 clutches in my time. One on my Ford XC 351 4 speed & later on a Mazda 323..
No alignment tool so I used a small plastic coke bottle. Worked a treat.

Love yur work. But u already know this.

Hi Brother, just to give you a little old school info about the new spigot bush/ bearing to make it last is before fitting it carefully remove the dust seal and pack a little extra grease and carefully install the dust cover. I've been doing this for a while to increase the life of the bearing.

Mate I wish you were here in Ingham hahaha I need rings and bearings and a rear main seal which I bought from Mace. I used to do this in the army but being 51 now this body isn't 24 years old any more and crawling under and over a v6 isn't much fun on your Pat Malone

I've owned many manual cars and very rarely needed to change a clutch ,,,a lot of the problems is the driver ,many people really don't ,know how to use a clutch ,or drive a manual gearbox

2 vehicles I’ve owned with heavy clutch pedalsI found that throw out bearing, shits itself way before clutch plate wears out. No I don’t sit at lights in gear with clutch down. But anyhow enjoying watching your videos🙂
