Early Sunday morning, September 13, 2026, the KM Virgo Transport 8, carrying 243 people on a Surabaya-Banjarmasin voyage, capsized and sank in the waters off Masalembo, Java Sea. Strong winds and high waves hampered the evacuation process, until a joint search and rescue team was able to dive on the seventh day to retrieve the victims trapped inside.
Two weeks after the tragedy, the exact cause of the sinking of the KM Virgo Transport 8 remains unknown. The captain is still being questioned as a witness, and the salvage process for the wreck has not yet begun. This uncertainty has fueled demands from the victims' families for corporate accountability. The Facts Team also visited PT Virgo Karya Shipping to investigate the ship's seaworthiness, alleged negligence, and corporate responsibility in this tragedy.
