Around 1480, Sandro Botticelli painted a mysterious young Florentine nobleman holding a small roundel containing an image of a saint. But this isn't a painted imitation of a medallion. The object in his hands is an actual fragment cut from a 14th-century altarpiece, physically inserted into the wooden panel before Botticelli completed the portrait. The fragment is attributed to the Sienese painter Bartolommeo Bulgarini, making the object in the young man's hands roughly a century older than the portrait itself.

We'll also look at Botticelli's connection to the Medici circle, the possible identity of the sitter, the technical discoveries made through X-rays and infrared reflectography, and how the painting's unusual construction reveals Botticelli adjusting the composition around the physical object as he worked.
