I used to work front desk at the Ahwahnee. What's scarier than the shining is the Employee salaries!

900 dollars for a worn-down hotel and chicken tendies for dinner. Insane.
The fireplace and the elevators were cool though.

My grandfather was the real head chef at that hotel for several years in the1960's. It was an amazing experience.

To be precise, Stephen King's inspiration for the Overlook was the Stanley in Colorado at wich he stayed in 1974. The Stanley also features in a few exterior scenes in the movie and the exterior studio sets are heavily based on the Stanley. The Awahnee served as inspiration for the movie's interior sets. Ansel Adams used to stay frequently at the Awahnee.

So sad that this hotel isn’t being maintained to its historical standards.
When I stayed there in the late 90’s it was in pristine condition.

The Ahwahnee Hotel was used by Kubrick as the design for the Overlook Hotel. The hotel that inspired King to write The Shinning was the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado. He and his wife spent a night there. It was the end of the season, and they were the only guests in the hotel. King had in mind a novel that he abandoned, but The Stanly got his mind working.

Darn, the hotel was pretty disappointing. You would think with such a reputation to uphold, the hotel would maintain the upkeep. It's such a gorgeous setting. Thank you for actually poking around the place at 3:00 in the morning. That's dedication!

The Stanley Hotel in Colorado could also be considered the 'real' Overlook Hotel as well. That's where Stephen King was when he got the inspiration for "The Shining", in the middle of the night while staying there. It was late in the season, and the hotel was almost empty, apart for a few staff and King and his wife, Tabitha. They pretty much had it to themselves.
