Practical Tips to Improve your Color Skills

I’m so excited to finally chat about color mixing! In this video I share what I’ve learned about color over many years of being a painter, and the methods I use for keeping those skills sharp and continuously building on that knowledge. I’ve combined some more philosophical tips with practical advice and tutorials to distill everything I know and love about color into one video for you. Which means there’s lots of stuff I didn’t get a chance to touch on, so if you have any questions, ask away in the comments!

i'm only 8 minutes in, but i love that your advice is more general, more like a mindset for how one can approach ANY artwork. rather than a bunch of specific tips that are only applicable based on certain contexts, i like that you encourage people to think about HOW to think about something instead of just WHAT to think about. i'm learning a lot from your tips, thank you!

I never comment on videos (bc I watch YouTube on TV). This made me go to my phone to come comment. This is the best video on color I have seen. Thank you for your time making this. Plus, very relaxing - and thank you for no loud music overlay.

I love everything about this! Thank you! And thanks for not putting any music in.❤

I will also say as a painter and photographer, that the photographs you’re copying are art in themselves 😊😊

To me the tricky thing about that painting is composition. Fitting all those shapes in a small rectangle correctly is even more crucial than getting color correct at first.

You're such a wonderful teacher (and artist)! Thank you for taking the time to not only share your tips, but to actually do the exercise as a tutorial in the video. It's been incredibly helpful to see the process. I'm excited to try my own master copy color studies now.

I'm still at the beginning of your video, but i couldn't agree more with you, when you say we should listen to the colours speak. In my experience i share your same point of view

Wow! I've watched a lot of videos over the years and this might be my absolute favorite of all time! Your insight really speaks to me and what I'm trying to do and how I'm trying to paint. Thank you!!!

nerding out about color, I found my people. such a helpful video, your color palette/exercises continue inspiring me in my practice, you're so good at achieving contrast and balance with muted colors which is something I find challenging. thank you!

Amazing video, I resonated with everything you said. I appreciate you making this video because it's exactly what I needed to hear (and not the usual script of color theory videos) so thank you!

So glad you did this video, and not just kept it as a thought❤

I loved seeing this whole process and intend to regularly add this exercise to my own practice. I was really struck by your thoughts that not only are you studying color but picking up on composition skills as well. Thank you, really fun!

i love to make studies from the paintings that capture me and are like a mystery waiting for me to unlock

Listen to color! That idea really sparked something in me.

I tried a colour study only once before but appraoched it from such a harsh mindset. You have made colour feel so approachable, thank you ✨️💛✨️

I find it hard to "imagine" colors, so I try to use references. I see that some artists make a color study on traditional or digital, maybe that could help me cause all I see in my mind is black lol. Seeing your studies it sure is tedious but helpful!

Thank you so much for this very helpful video on colour mixing. Its amazing how a small shift in colour makes such a difference to the overall composition.
