When I was in grade school, there was a boy in our class that everyone picked on. My friend and I, sadly, often contributed to this behavior. One day, we decided to befriend this kid cause we felt bad about how we all treated him, and he was a nice kid. One night, not long after, I woke up in the middle of the night and there was a presence at the end of my bed. Figures kinda blurry and dimly glowing. I fell back asleep immediately and chalked it up to a dream. The next day, when I went to school, I found out our new friend, his sister and his mom had died in a house fire the night before. I'll never forget him, and I hope he was happy that short time he had friends.

Surely the waiter in the first one would remember Roger rushing out and not paying the bill? 😮

I knew a guy who was waiting to be evacuated from a US air base in Vietnam. Hangar was full of GI's waiting for the next plane. An officer came through a door in the rear, and announced they had room on a plane that was already on the tarmac, if anyone wanted to leave immediately. My friend was the only one who said yes, and he followed the officer to a plane that was carrying caskets. Officer went to the cockpit, and my friend strapped in for the flight in the cargo section.
On arrival, no one else got off the plane except my friend and the pilots. In the terminal he got the awful news that that entire hanger where he had been waiting had been bombed, with only one or two survivors.
Days later when he was about to actually leave Vietnam, he ran into someone he knew who had been in the hangar and survived the bombing. He asked him why he hadn't joined him when the officer called out the invitation. The survivor asked him WTF he was talking about, there was no officer. He said all he saw was my friend standing up and walking out the door in the rear of the hangar. True story, and at my request, he told the story as part of the talk he was already giving to a crowd of about 50 people.

I like the idea that John was able to overcome death to return the favor to his old best friend and save his life.

Scary shit man. I used to be a yellow cab in NYC after 911. Worked from 5pm to 5am. One slow night I was flagged by an elegant lady who asked me if I could take her to the Waldorf Astoria . I saw her open the door but the door never closed. I waited to hear the door close but it stayed open. When I got out to close the open rear door, I expected her to be hunched in the back or something but nobody was around. The streets were dead silent. This happened on Greenwich St near Chambers. I stop driving cabs after that incident, and never passed that that street since.

So who paid for Roger's coffee at the Cafe? He left with John saying he would buy.

In regards to the 1st story about the bus:
My husband was serving in the military in a foreign country, where he was born. One day, he was able to come home on a brief furlough to visit my MIL, his mom, who was dying of cancer at the time. Since my husband didn’t always get a chance to see her, and he never knew if this would be the last time he saw his mother alive, he got off of the bus several stops before his actual stop, so that he could go into a shop along the way and buy something lovely for his dying mother. My husband walked into the little shop, and within a minute or two, he heard an enormous explosion. It turns out that there was a suicide bomber terrorist on the public transport bus he was just on, and if he hadn’t gotten off the bus to buy his dying mother something nice, my husband would have been dead, too.

When my dad was a boy he lived in the mountains in coal country where metal bridges took freight trains over the valleys. One day he and his brother saw a storm was brewing and went to get under the overhang of one of those bridges. As they were heading towards the hiding place, a man whom his brother was familiar with as an uncle who lived in a distant town and rarely visited, approached them and told them to run home and not look back. When they got home the older brother told their mom who had given them orders to get home at which point the mom produced a photo asking my dad (who had never met the uncle) if this was the man who told them to get home. My dad confirmed it was. At this point Grandma showed them a letter she’d just received stating that very man had died four months earlier. The news the next morning was that two kids who’d taken shelter under that bridge had perished when lightning struck the bridge.

The Scottish Highlands & Islands are absolutely FULL of mystery. My grandma and her friend when they were kids growing up on the west coast saw a large "beast" they called it which they thought was a horse in the distance. As it got closer they both realised it wasn't a horse, it was a large being on two legs with dark hair, much bigger than a person coming towards them. The both ran through the field and jumped the gate to where their school was and ran down the path. My grandma turned around and said she saw it standing there at the gate, on two legs looking at her. Their story never changed and there were more sightings of it, they called it the black beast. This wasn't a trick of the light however this was a very real creature or being😳

When Roger ask John if he's ok. John said "don't worry, it's nothing you can catch." Those are words to live by. John is dead, and he literally prevented Roger from catching death himself. John was Roger's guardian angel. 😇 That is so awesome. ❤

That first story, aww. Well, it's no wonder John didn't look so well, but he saved his friend's life—wow.

Can we ever really grasp how humbling his stories are? There is so much happening in the world that we know so little about, and so much we may never know at all. The stories he brings to us feel like tiny windows into that vast, bewildering world - a reminder of how little of it we ever get to see.
