Choosing paint colours can feel annoyingly stressful. It's an overwhelm of options and the room can still feel wrong once it's painted 😫 In this video I’m sharing the paint colours I chose for my own home, the one I regretted, and the simple method I now use to choose colours with complete confidence.
P.S Guys, this was a super hard video to edit for you. We've tried our best to make the colours look accurate but they just don't look as "true" on screen as they do in real life. Like Alpine looks more blue off-screen. School House White has more yellow tones off-screen. So definitely order samples and try them in your homes before buying, if you see any you like.

And this is from someone who got tired and frustrated with repainting, too! 😕
Light is everything when it comes to seeing true color and undertones, but the biggest piece with interior design is what the colors are referring to in the room.
The light shines equally, morning, noon, and evening, on those same materials. And the same at night with the artificial lighting. I prefer the range of 2800 Kelvin of incandescent bulbs to the 3000 Kelvin of halogen bulbs.
You need to analyze the undertones 🎨 of all the permanent materials in the room, like flooring, millwork, and built-in cabinets (anything you can't paint out). And then analyze the undertones of the larger furnishings that you don't have the budget to change, like sofas, loveseats, casegoods, etc.
You need to choose 2 undertones max per room, or you're really going to detect the disharmony. Unless you are an Interior Designer with ninja-like decorating skills to distract the eye from the mismatch and mistakes, don't go there... EDIT! It helps to have an area rug that has the 2 undertones and an accent color that you are using in the room to tie them together.
Then choose paint last! Make sure it has the undertone of the largest quantity of colors in the room.
🌟 The paint must reference the materials in the room! 🌟
I learned this from Maria Killam, a color expert in Vancouver. She trains interior designers and homeowners. She has a color wheel for analyzing the 9 major neutral undertones and 4 major whites in paint and accessories. This was a game changer! What you need is a good system for analysis! That takes away all of the confusion, no mistakes, no guessing, no blaming the light! 😂
My training comes from personal color analysis. The skin is the material that we are working with. And while hair color is your biggest accessory (it's like the sofa in the room), it must reference the undertones in the skin, which you can't change. The best system I've found so far is Kathryn Kalize's Sci-Art 12-season color analysis system.
The color analysis system you use must work in every situation. If your system isn't working, it is not complete.
Hope this helps! Happy painting only once, and getting it right the first time! 😅 😊
Fifi your home is lovely! With all those competing undertones in your kitchen and living room. You are a ninja! 🥷 ❤
