Day Two of our Lake District motorcycle tour delivered some of the most demanding, rewarding and unforgettable riding we have experienced in the UK. Riding two-up on the KTM 1290 Super Adventure, we left Bowness-on-Windermere and headed deeper into the heart of the Lake District for a full day of mountain passes, steep climbs, tight hairpins, incredible scenery and real motorcycle adventure touring.

Our route took us through the beautiful Eskdale Valley before reaching one of the most famous and feared motorcycle roads in Britain — Hardknott Pass. Known for its brutal gradients, sharp switchbacks and narrow mountain road, Hardknott is a true test for any rider, especially riding two-up with luggage on a large adventure motorcycle. The climb demands concentration and commitment, but the reward is a spectacular riding experience surrounded by some of the most dramatic scenery anywhere in the UK.

With steep ascents, technical descents and relentless hairpin bends, this is the kind of road that makes motorcycle touring in the Lake District so memorable. Every corner reveals another incredible view across the fells, valleys and mountain landscape that makes Cumbria such a legendary destination for adventure riders and touring motorcyclists.

After conquering Hardknott Pass, we continued across Wrynose Pass, another iconic Lake District motorcycle route packed with narrow roads, steep sections and flowing bends. Riding these passes two-up adds another level of challenge and teamwork between rider and pillion, especially on roads where momentum, balance and smooth control become essential. It is exactly the kind of real-world riding experience that makes long-distance motorcycle travel so rewarding.

As the ride continued, we made our way towards Coniston Water, enjoying quieter roads, peaceful scenery and the more relaxed side of motorcycle touring after the intensity of the mountain passes. The Lake District constantly changes character from technical riding roads to calm scenic cruising, making it one of the best motorcycle touring destinations in the UK for adventure bikes, touring motorcycles and riders looking for cinematic landscapes and unforgettable roads.

Not everything went to plan though. Arriving at the Windermere Ferry, we discovered the crossing was closed, forcing an unexpected detour and a longer ride back towards Bowness. But that is part of real motorcycle adventure travel — adapting to changing conditions, making new routes on the fly and simply enjoying the ride regardless of what the day throws at you.

This episode captures the full experience of two-up motorcycle touring in the Lake District — challenging roads, famous mountain passes, steep gradients, hairpin bends, scenic riding, travel setbacks, peaceful moments and the freedom that comes with exploring the UK by motorcycle.

If you enjoy motorcycle touring videos, adventure motorcycle travel, KTM 1290 Super Adventure content, scenic motorbike rides, UK motorcycle road trips, pillion touring, mountain passes, cinematic motorcycle journeys and authentic riding experiences, we hope this ride gives you a small taste of what makes motorcycle travel so special.
