Two American founders I've invested in came to G4. They came to see how we operate and left saying they were going to copy G4's entire culture. In the middle of the meeting, I called Nubank. Then I sent an audio message to Safra. Both responded before we even got up from the table.
These American founders did in 90 days what many companies don't do in three years. They arrived with a dashboard that drove a big bank crazy. And their problem today isn't demand. It's something else, and Nubank can be part of the solution.
I did what I do with every founder I invest in: I picked up my cell phone. I called Nubank, texted one of the most important guys at Safra, and promised to call my former country manager in Nigeria. That's also G4's culture.
Then, tour. I showed them the organizational chart, the reason I pay bonuses based on FCF (Free Cash Flow) and not revenue, and why G4's culture is more like a team locker room than an office. There's a horn blaring to hit targets, people working midnight, competitor posters on the wall, and a rule about noise that I taught them in the sales room. And there's a phrase on the wall that I had to translate on the spot for the American founders.
Along the way, the conversation about Brazil that no investor likes to hear: 14% interest rates, debt nearing 100% of GDP, the founder going to Paraguay. I kept 4% of my first company. G4 never needed investors, and in front of the FCF poster I explain why that's G4's culture, not luck.
There's also the part about Nubank, the part about Safra, and what David Safra has to do with these guys' liquidity problems. And then there's the moment when the American founders look at the sales team and understand why G4's culture can't be contained in a PowerPoint presentation.
If you're building a company in Brazil without a16z to finance you, this video is for you. If you want to understand what I do when I invest in a founder, this is also for you. And if you just want to see the faces of two American founders discovering G4's culture up close, watch until the end.
