It's amazing how Westinghouse consistently overpromised and underdelivered on their engines for like a decade yet the US Navy kept going back to them.

Sad that Vought never got to accomplish their dreams of making super heroes

"*Also if you paused to read this you're a nerd."

Be honest here, we're all here to watch someone make alternate history airplane designs. We were all gonna pause to read that.

Lesson learned in the first 3 minutes of the video:
the reason almost all fighters have a few very similar layouts nowadays is that these are the ones that WORK.

Messier: Finishes recording a Flyout video. Goes back to working on the NGAD program

A video on F2-Y Sea Dart would be a perfect sequel to this.

Vought has the habit of either making the best fighter possible for its time or the most depressing shit of its time.....and absolutely nothing in between.

Having watched The Boys, it's no surprise that a Vought product killed its own more than the enemy.

1:48 Yes I do. My all-time favourite aircraft are the F7U Cutlass, the Sea Vixen, the Yak-38, and of course the F3H Demon. Poseidon needs his sacrifices.

I love the Cutlass so much, regardless of minor details like ‘reliability’ or ‘safety issues’

It's a testament to how few people ever paid attention to naval testing and engineering programs that the best acronym Navair could come up with for their aircraft test division was "gnat sea."... within just a few years of the war.

(and yes, I say this as someone who used to work for Navair)

I think it interesting that some of most experienced F7U pilots actually loved the plane during service because despite the safety issues the Cutlass was the Navy’s highest performance fighter of the time basically said everyone else has a skill issue.

2:43 - With that loss rate, I feel like the interaction between the F7U ground crew and the pilot before closing the canopy goes something like: Ground Crew: ...yeah...  Pilot: ...yeah... closes canopy

Naval aviator: "That thing is dangerous!"
Vought: "Yes."
Aviator: "To us!"
Vought: "Still dangerous."

The build timelapses were what got me into your videos. It’s a shame that they are rarely seen anymore

Your speech at the end had me imagining that in 100 years someone is gonna be saying "can we use the power of hindsight to fix the F-22 Raptor?"

“Doing their 14th slam and go of the day”

Me a decade ago: I resemble that remark
