The Battle of Midway was the turning point of the Pacific War. In June 1942, four Japanese aircraft carriers: Akagi, Kaga, Sōryū, and Hiryū faced off against a smaller U.S. fleet under Admirals Nimitz, Spruance, and Fletcher.

My grandfather fought in midway. He never talked about it. He lived to see 88 years. I wish i was 1/2 the man he was. That was truly the best generation. Love you all.

The bravery shown by the Marine Buffalo pilots is legendary. Knowing you were climbing into an obsolete aircraft, against the most advanced naval aircraft at the time, while also being outnumbered. Absolute warriors.

Dad was on Yorktown CV5 at Coral Sea and Midway.
He lost her on his birthday June 7th 1942❤️🇺🇸

As to the production of new weapons, I think Churchill's comment says it best:
"The 1st year - Nothing. The 2nd year - A Trickle. The 3rd year - All you want."

Man. The more I look into this battle the more I fall in love with the Yorktown. That sucker took a pounding. And if the damage control team had not done a bang up job, those subsequent waves of planes may have gone after CV 6 and Hornet. Unsung heroes. Awesome story!

And Fletcher never got his due! He was in charge overall and allowed Spruance to do his thing. Fletcher won Midway, tied Coral Sea, and held his own at Santa Cruz. That due literally changed the tide and NEVER gets his credit.

Outstanding Video ... Except 1 thing. The U.S.S. Hamman was tied up directly adjacent and side by side to the Yorktown. When it was struck by an IJN Torpedo and cut in half. There are photographs and eyewitnesses to this fact. However still an excellent marvel-worthy video ...

One major correction. Adm. Spruance was the junior of the two US commanders. Adm. Fletcher was in overall command of the US Fleet at Midway.

In the 1976 "Midway" Mr Miyagi advises Yamamoto: "We can achieve a great victory, providing Nimitz and Halsey do exactly what you expect."

The "execution" of the three American prisoners was an act of pure spite and is in reality an atrocity. Contrast that with the US pilot who felt sorry for the Japanese sailors floundering in the water.

16:46, never heard that, read through a few books and the most any of them mentioned was a B-26 so badly damaged it tried to crash into the Akagi and just barely missed hitting the bridge.
When Gay died, they spread his ashes at the spot where the rest of his squadron had died.

Don’t forget Dusty Kleese contributed immensely to destroying several Japanese carriers. He dropped his bombs where he anticipated where he knew the carrier would move to

This one goes off the rails before 12:30 when the “unmistakeable” message that the US knew an armed transport convoy was heading for midway… was mistakenly not passed along, to all commands, considering that radio silence only hurt the Japanese now. It would be 20 hours after this loss of surprise that the Japanese KB would find out they lost the element of surprise. Getting a radio message does not reveal one’s position, while just like Heath vs Buford at Gettysburg, an infantry transport traveling blind in enemy territory reveals there’s more power behind it.

Two quick little errors I thought I would mention, the MI plan originally also included carrier division 5 (Shokaku nd Zuikaku) but they were laid up after Coral Sea. Secondly Akagi was not the largest Japanese carrier, Kaga was significantly larger being a converted battleship while Akagi was a converted battlecruiser. Kaga had the largest air wing also.

Great job!!! I will never understand how Matt Best DID NOT get the MOH. He hit 2 Carriers and had his lungs partially destroyed during the first attack do to his oxygen being messed up.

Icons showing F4U profiles are shown repeatedly. The production model Corsair, F4U-1, first flew on 6/29/42. Narration states after early U.S. aerial attack that Nagumo thusly became concerned about possibility of presence of U.S. carriers. Then later, after IJN scout radios sighting of U.S. carriers, narrative states Nagumo became concerned, as if that was his first indication. If that’s not enough, narrative states that until then, all U.S. strikes had been conducted by Midway based planes.

Thanks for the hard work. But you completely missed the all-important contribution of Thach squadron and Thach weave in midway, which were one of the real reasons Japanese CAP was not doing air patrol (they were fighting the Thach squadron)

Arguably the most influential pilot in the entire midway battle who's name I only heard one time (Dusty)who's success's shipped him state side to trane roockys gave credit to everyone else but his 3 -500 pound direct hits 2 on carriers,( the first was his awareness that all dive bombers were attacking one) chose to separate mid dive to go after the second one and his hit on the destroyer made him the only pilot to have three direct hits with fuselage ordinance on three ships in one day

@BlackOrchidcrypto 10 months ago

The level of bravery our pilots displayed is beyond words. It's a shame the general population has no idea the level of sacrifices these men made for their country.
