A Malinois would be the center of my world

My dog was supposedly crate trained. What she wanted was to be by our side.  Done! She now sleeps in our bed.

I pickd up a year old what I thought was a Shepherd pup.  Turns out to be  a  90% Malinois.  Now I got my hands full.  Im 78 andd ain't gonna run 2 miles a day.  The dog  (F) Skutor is way to good to be wasted with an idiot or shelter.  I learning all I can about the breed and "wow" there is a lot a lot to know.  Thanks for the help !

When I drive my truck down the back road, my boy scratches the glovebox to tell me to drive faster.

Imagine that the Malinois is a 7-year-old human child who cannot speak English.  That's the approximate intelligence level of a Malinois (or a Standard Poodle or a Jack Russell).  Imagine violating personal boundaries of a child, acting chaotically, putting the kid in a jail cell for 23 hours a day, and the surroundings are boring.  How would a human child react?  Could it be that sitting in a classroom still and silent for six hours a day really BOTHERS kids?  Think of how much worse it must be for a Malinois because the human child can articulate the discomfort--but a dog can only bark and howl and tear things up.

Due to hubris, many humans underestimate dog intelligence.  "I be hoo-man--me superior!"  Yeah, right--a bomb detection Malinois that shared kennel space with my supply office observed how his kennel was locked up and figured out how to open his kennel.  He also figured out that he could leap over the top of the kennel fence but didn't like to do that because sometimes it was painful.  I didn't do anything to fix his problems because that would have interfered with the bond between handler and dog and compromise bomb sniffing effectiveness.  Dogs and humans have an unwritten contract that we humans frequently violate.  Malinois are smart enough to figure out when their humans are in breach of contract but the dog lacks the power to correct human misbehavior.

I have a Belgian/shepherd mix. He is definitely the most enthusiastic dog I have ever had. He is constantly wherever I am. I am fortunate to live in a place where he can be off lease a lot and he definitely keeps all the vicious squirrels away from me. He is so smart and fun.

Love Belgian Mallinois. Had them for 28 years now.

This K9 is not for just anyone.

My poor old man passed away a few days ago. It was gentle and he was comfortable, but it sucks so bad. We were attached at the hip. I had the prefect routine for him, and i really hope he was happy. I worked so hard to do everything for him. Even my friends and family would comment about it. If there is an afterlife i really hope he knows how hard i tried with him. I hope he was happy. He seemed happy, but you just never know for sure what they are thinking. Anyways, i have tried my best to keep it together, but without him, it feels like someone is squeezing the life out of my chest. Frequently, i will forget just for a moment that he is gone, and i will look in an area where he would be to play with him or give him pets, and I instantly remember hes no longer here. I cant ever do this again. This is the hardest loss i have ever experienced. I have been to dozens of memorial services, and have seen so many good people and friends die, but loosing my dog has been the worst for me. I will never forget his smile or his comfort. When he was comfortable, i was comfortable. During bed time he would flop right on top of me as if he is doing like a mini trust fall. I would have to catch him, and gently guide him beside me. Haha😂. He would sleep in my arms until one of us got too hot or needed to move. I will miss him, and i really hope there is an angel specifically stationed at his side 24/7. He definitely has special needs that only i can understand. He needs all the play and comfort in the world. Every second of every day. If he couldnt go somewhere, then i didnt go either. I didnt trust leaving him with anyone else. Like i said, we were attached at the hip. Please God, let him be ok. Even if you hate me, just please look after him. If i have to go to hell, fine, just dont punish the dog because of my behavior to add to my hell. Thats all i care about is his well being. It gives me anxiety to the point of momentary panic attacks knowing my dog is facing eternity by himself. I just need to know if hes ok. Please 🙏

Don’t have the time for one never wanted one but mine came up to me on the street as a stray and I feel even in a appartment I can give it a better life than what it could happen on a shelter .

I have to crate my Mali due to work, but our office is next to a greenspace so i am out doing something with her 5/6 times a day

My Mals are/were the best friends I ever had. Gentle with the grandkids and my wife’s beagles - fierce defenders of our farm. Great temperament if you treat them right. I grew up around this breed and East German Shepards. Second nature to me, but this video contains great advice.
I was in the military for nearly 30 years and knew some great dogs that served alongside me. What a privilege to see how the bond between a good person and a good dog goes. I even adopted one at the end of our service.
Man’s best friend? No question!

We own two. This video describes our dogs perfectly.

I Feel your grieve as if it's my own..... I lost my perfect Malinois Aiky when he was only nine years old. He developed a brain tumor. No money in the world could save him. It's been 13 years ago that we had to let go of each other, but reading your story I still cry for him. Please cherish the love you two had. It's priceless. You will never forget him. But unfortunately you will never completely get over this severe loss. But the good thing is that you both had a wonderful loving time together. Malinois are angels. Send to us for just a short time to lighten the world around us.

This is great. So much BS on the internet about these dogs, you are correct on all counts. My two year old is fantastic, but we needed a year of one on one training (together) with a very good trainer and me being retired to get her to where she is happy, loyal, well adjusted and non-stressed. I cannot imagine having one of these dogs without understanding all the responsibility that comes with ownership. Great video.

I wish I came across this breed 45 years ago when I was younger.  Because they deserve understanding & confident training.

I'm sitting one at the moment. I went through the video with him, he loved the explanations about himself and is relaxed now.

This is a perfect description of s person wit adhd.  Treat them right and watch them run!

Malinois are strong, loyal, athletic and extremely intelligent. They are highly trainable and are not by nature vicious dogs. There is a reason they are so commonly used by police and military units while pitbulls are never used in these roles..

Harsh corrections and separation are definitely on the hate list for my dog
