Crocheter here who makes her own rules. Pro tip: before starting a project, crochet a swatch about 30 centimeters square using the yarn, hook and stitch you plan for your project. This will give you the gauge YOU will produce.

Then, if you're making your own pattern, you can calculate how many stitches/rows will get you the size you want.

If youre using someone else's pattern, it should state the guage. Take that number and calculate the total length or height, then use the stitches per cm from your swatch to dictate how many of YOUR stitches are needed to get the size you want.

Next pro tip: you can mark a row where you want to increase or decrease stitches or change stitch with a safety pin, hairpin, paperclip or piece of yarn tied loosely.

You might have learnt this since then, but that soluble interfacing actually goes on the right side of the fabric - especially for anything with a nap like velvet! It prevents the threads from sinking into the pile and will make your designs much more obvious and crisp.

the water soluble interfacing is supposed to be used on top of the fabric, especially fabrics like velvet that have a hair, as to avoid puckering, moving of the fabric and catching on the needle, so if you are gonna do something like that again i reccomend using both the interfacings, it makes it much smoother, even with gold thread that keeps breaking :D (personal experience)

Idea: You should make a clothing item based on your cat! I know that it sounds kind of weird, but think about it: you could use his characteristics (psychical and nonpsychical) as inspiration. For example, maybe the piece is furry, maybe it matches the color of his fur, or maybe it's spicy, like his attitude! Anyways, it could be a fun challenge and a potential idea if you ever get art block.

The secret to working with modern velvet is freezer paper. Freezer paper, also called Butcher paper, has a wax coating on one side while the other is untreated. With an iron on load heat, you can adhere the freezer paper to the fabric, and you have instant no longer stretchy velvet. I always adhere the paper to the uncut fabric, then layout the pattern pieces and cut. The butcher paper also helps minimize the velvet frying at the cut edges. Just finish your edges and stitch as normal and when done, you can simply peel the paper off and if any pieces are being difficult, simply apply a little bit of steam or a warm iron.

For the embroidery for the future, if you are using a fabic with any type of pile or thickness to it you want to use the tear away on back as well as the wash away on the front. It just helps the thread float on top of the pile which helps it cover the area better than without which makes the pile stick through between the threads. Also if you can up the density in your embroidery files that makes them a bit bolder. I used to work in an embroidery shop and I know how much of a pain it can be with dome designs.

I think the piece came out amazing though. That color blue is just delicious looking.

I know you don’t really have the time to look at all the comments, but as a fellow crocheter, I would suggest for the sleeves that you would create stretchy cuffs…. It allows you to have that lantern sleeve, but it also cuffs around your wrists so it doesn’t go all over the place…. It’s called crochet ribbed cuff. Very easy to attach crochet to crochet or you can just sew it and considering you’re good at sewing I don’t think that will be daunting for you….

Im 65, born in the 60s and 70% of my wardrobe is velvet 😅
I also love to sew and yes, what a nightmare velvet is to work with 🙄
The jacket is beautiful and it is something I would wear for sure.
Not having an embroidery machine, I've just usually gone for hand embroidery, which I love or iron on premade embroidered patches.
All that hard work paid off, its a one off, individual piece or art ❤
