On December 26, 1944, Lt. Charles Boggess and the crew of Cobra King, an M4A3E2 Sherman Jumbo of the 37th Tank Battalion, 4th Armored Division, led the armored drive through Assenois toward the surrounded American forces at Bastogne. This video examines the dangerous tactics behind that breakthrough during the Battle of the Bulge: why the lead tanks were ordered to keep moving under fire, how infantry and follow-on armor fought to keep the narrow corridor open, and why the relief of Bastogne depended on a coordinated combined-arms effort rather than a single “invincible” tank. It is the story of Cobra King, the 101st Airborne Division, Patton’s Third Army, and the fragile armored spearhead that finally made physical contact with the Bastogne perimeter.
