So it's basically social media but there's a hundred years between posts and re-posts.

I’m so Pavlov-ed into seeing Dan respond to someone who is catastrophically wrong about everything they say. I kept anticipating the crazy to come out, but this lady being basically right on every point was refreshing.

I feel like it would be more surprising if they didn’t take ideas from the cultures that were around them

Nice to see one of these videos where the content creator isn't wrong on basically every point.

Short answer: yes; longer answer: ye-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-es.

Story telling was the form of communication of the day for the masses.

Dan not having to completely refute every claim the video makes is a nice change.

“In a blimp accident over the Orange Bowl” 😂😂😂😂😂😂

It's always interesting to see a video where you don't have to explain common decency and how not to be a bigot. Thanks for all your hard work regardless! :D

"Same plot" in the same way that the Lego Movie and the Matrix have the same plot. (A seemingly ordinary guy learns his reality is an illusion and joins the resistance.)
As you say, they don't so much "borrow it" as they take some of the basic concepts and rewrite the story to promote their ideas and interests.
The important thing for understanding the culture isn't really, "Where did this myth originate?" (even if you could figure that out.) It's what the people who wrote the stories into the literature of their people were seeking to do with the story.
That said, I agree that there are clear signs that the biblical writers were bringing other sources into their writing.

I have known of Gilgamesh for a long time but it never clicked that the Bible has ripped off most of the story, until i watched an illustrated version of the Epic where the snake steals the plant of immortality. So, if you are a Christian or Jewish, you have to ask if you are being misled by writers who were looking at some else's work.

I appreciate these videos expanding and clarifying on a creator's points. Can we get links to the original creator?

I just wish they could've kept the detail of the ark being a giant cube while they were peeking at Utnapishtim's notes

That last I think is key. A lot of the Bible, but the Tanakh and the New Testament, were written by and for marginalized and oppressed groups and they both clearly reflect that and clearly served a purpose of building and supporting those communities.
But those ideas of persecution and of surviving with the world against you turn dark when your group comes into power. Then it's easy to still see, as many right wing Christian groups do today, any opposition as the same persecution and martyrdom seen in the stories.

And every time I say this to evangelicals they whine that the older myths are not the same.. or  the pelo-Hebrew was around during the same period…like any of that changes the fact that

In Haiti 🇭🇹 our gods drink wine, instead of blood, our gods lit fire with no lighters or matches. You see the Haitian gods don’t hate people, blacks or whites or Mexican.

Excellent discussion, if you ask me. Both ends of it.

To be fair, at no point in the Pentateuch did El, YHWH, Moses, or anyone say that any of the laws or the stories were completely original creations.

This is crazy. When i found out about this stuff 12 years ago my world went upside-down.
