We rode horses into a mountain storm in northern Iran, then ate kebab grilled by a village butcher in Subatan.
An Iran travel documentary about real village life in Iran, Persian food, and the people of Gilan.
A full food and travel day: Rudbar olives, Talesh mountain food, and one of the busiest restaurants in the north.

We start in Rudbar, the heart of Iran's olive country. I show you the different olives grown here and my personal favorite, zeytoon parvardeh: olives marinated with pomegranate molasses, walnuts, and herbs.

After breakfast, we meet our horse guides and ride through the green highlands toward Subatan, a village high in the Talesh mountains. Lunch is chicken kebab with grilled tomatoes and fresh bread, the group starts singing and dancing, and as we climb higher, the rain gets heavier and heavier until we have to head back to shelter.

Once the storm passes, we visit an old wooden village shop full of old-school snacks. Right next to it is a butcher who does everything himself: he cuts the meat, puts it on skewers, and grills it for you right there. While we wait, I explain Iranian money and what 10,000, 50,000, 100,000, 200,000, 500,000 and 1 million toman are actually worth in US dollars. Then we try Shamiye Taleshi, a local dish from the Talesh region.

Next, we walk out to the sheep grazing on Subatan's green plains, stop for local hazelnuts and natural honey, and the whole group ends up dancing together.

We finish at Mrs. Marzieh's garden restaurant, famous for its chicken, fish, and sour chicken, and so busy you have to wait in line for a table. I show you what Iranians actually order, we have Persian tea, I tell you what our whole spread cost, and Mrs. Marzieh tells us how she started this place. On the way out, a local woman squeezes fresh bitter orange and orange juice right in front of us.
