The flag went up over the American sector on July 20, 1945, and the new president stood in the ruins of a city he had only read about. Eisenhower was there in his role as theater commander, and at some point during those days the two men sat together in a car and drove through what was left of Berlin.

Truman's account, written years later in his memoirs and repeated many times before that, has the general listening while the president made an extraordinary offer. Truman said he told Eisenhower there was nothing the general might want that the president would not help him get — and that this included, definitely and specifically, the presidency in 1948.

Eisenhower's version, in At Ease, is not a denial. He remembered the offer and remembered his reply: that he did not know who the president's opponent would be, but it would not be him.
