As a 10-year-old boy from the upper Peninsula of Michigan, my father and uncle took me to my first major league baseball game to watch the Tigers play the Brewers at Milwaukee County Stadium. I caught a fall tip off the bat of Jim Northrop very happy day for a young boy as long as I’m alive, Jim Northrop will always be remembered rest in peace.

Hearing about Kaline, Horton, and Stanley all sharing one outfield explains so much about how hard it was to break into that lineup.

He'd never make it as a politician or used carsalesman but he's the kind of man you could trust and an example of the kind of man the World needs more of........the best a man can be.

This video brought back memories of listening to Tigers radio broadcasts with my late father every single evening.

As a 15 year old in 1968, I only remember the heroes of the time. Jim Northrop being one of them. Your stories are intriguing and bring back a time in my life that was both scary and exciting. The 1968 Tigers were a team of hero’s. During an otherwise dreadful time. Thanks for your story. It’s inspiring.

This is the kind of forgotten baseball story that deserves a permanent place in every fan's memory, thank you for telling it.

I remember when Northrup game up to the plate with men on base we were happy. That ball over Floods head was not going to be caught, the ball just keep on going. The part about Northrup and his broadcasting is true I wish the people broadcasting today would call a spade a spade.

Hearing about his brother Mickey passing away so young added a layer of sadness I never expected from a baseball story.

He was born in Breckenridge, I was born in Saginaw. He was my good neighbor, back in the day.

Thank you for the memories of a great summer in Detroit. What an awesome group of ball players that was. Jim Northrup was the strong consistency required to bring the championship to the Motor City.

My uncle played softball against the Detroit Caesars years later and always bragged about facing former major leaguers like him.

I’ll always remember that triple. I lived in Durham and some of the Tigers of ‘68 had played for the Durham Bulls when it was a Class A farm team for Detroit in ‘68. Gates Brown, Mickey Lolitch, and others were Bulls in ‘60. To say I was dialed in to the World Series was an understatement. I would agree with Jim Northrup that the first step made by Curt Flood was due to its being a liner nearly right at him which is the hardest to judge especially with the background.

Jim was a very good player. I'm not from Detroit, and always wondered why the Tigers traded him. Good documentary.

Thank you. I have Detroit heritage from the 1880s and admired him, but did not know the details. McAuliffe & Freehan also had Alzheimer's. The '68 Tigers are near deities to us. GM Jim Campbeii built a great team - many were from Michigan, even Detroit (Horton) & Detroit metro (Freehan).

He became my favorite baseball player in 1967, when I was 7 years old, and remains my favorite ballplayer of all time to this day. Regarding Billy Martin I remember one time someone said that Billy Martin was his own worst enemy and Northrup replied, "Not as long as I'm alive." I loved his fire and his outspokenness.

In later years Jim Northrup worked with a hunting outfitter, and he manned a booth at the Outdoorama. I was also an exhibitor at the Outdoorama, and I talked with Jim a lot. He was such a nice guy, a true class act.
