Wife and I and another couple sailed the A -> B route departing A on 9/28/25 on the vessel Magni. We opted for a DIY pre-cruise extension in A for two nights at the Sofitel Legend using American Express points - gorgeous hotel and location. We flew SFO - AMS on KLM and only had difficulties on the return due to threatened ground crew strikes at AMS. We lucked out with the river conditions and didn't have to change ships. Everything was just terrific about the cruise. The Viking staff are excellent, and the food was very good. We arrived in B after dark and it was indeed stunning. In fact, the captain made a lap around the river before docking allowing us to take in the sights. Our hotel in B was the Intercontinental and we had an upper floor room facing the parlement building - wife now totally spoiled. I don't think we would repeat the voyage because the river conditions are just too variable. Packing up and changing ships seems like too much trouble for us, plus there are just too many other adventures to have instead of repeating one and hoping for it somehow being better than the first iteration.

Never thought about this, but now I know I want to do the Grand European tour starting in Amsterdam. Important things to us is the wine season and the tulips. We want to avoid summer at all costs.

We did B to A in 2025 (to use the lingo), with friends doing the opposite. B to A had the advantage of hitting the bigger cities of Budapest and Vienna first then the smaller Austrian and Germany towns after we had settled into the vibe of the cruise. Our friends found they were tired after all the walk-in in those wonderful little towns and they didn’t feel up to the big city vibes at the end of their journey. But the experience is great in either direction. Also Budapest is a way cheaper place to get over jet lag.

All great considerations for everyone, as always! My BFF & I did the GE in Oct. 2025, B-A, & really enjoyed it—the scenery was spectacular! We do consider the flights & usually choose to make the connections going, & if possible, nonstop coming home to NYC which is usually easy from Amsterdam. We had Viking extensions at both ends which worked well for jet lag & enjoying both cities. I’d do that cruise again in either direction!

Don't stress out the direction of the GE. It's just a great cruise! It was our first river cruise. We went in early May 2022, spent 2 extra nights in Budapest, 4 extra nights in Amsterdam & 4 extra nights in Brussels. Our only regret is that we would have loved more time in Vienna. Our only bad choice - going for the low floor cabin. It was VERY noisy and I slept poorly, A few years later, we took another Viking river cruise and had a room on the balcony level. Had much better sleep. This fall - our first ocean cruise!

The B to A is the best but only if you spend 3-4 days in Budapest before boarding. Budapest is by far my favorite European city. Full stop.

We did the A->B last summer. Don’t think you could go wrong either direction. The Main Canal middle leg was the least interesting, with all the low bridges and locks that kept the top deck closed.

Thanks for this. We've been talking about doing a European river cruise, but I think I'd prefer to do the Rhine first, and my husband thinks the Danube would be better. The GET would solve that, I guess, if we could afford the time and cost of a longer cruise. I'm going to read the comments, but honestly have no idea what we would want--season or direction. We normally prefer shoulder season traveling, and my biggest concern would be water levels, so I'm thinking perhaps fall would be best for us? Would October be better than September? Late October vs. early October? Wine harvest time sounds good for us, though I do love tulips (but not enough to worry about water levels, if that would be a concern). As for direction, our nearest international airport is DFW and I know there are nonstop flights to A but not B. So I lean toward A-B because less chance of losing luggage on a nonstop. If it gets lost on the way home, less of an issue. I don't know if this is sound reasoning, so any input would be great!

No travel with Viking. We did Grand European Tour in August from Budapest to Amsterdam. Viking sells a luxury cruise but it was a bus tour. Obviously Viking cannot control water level, but Viking can control their policies. They sell luxury but it is not true. We swapped 4 ships, lots of packing and unpacking, change of itinerary, missed excursions and lack of communication.
Deviation and consumer fraud!!!!! They offered 60% voucher towards next cruise which is absolutely not adequate to what we experienced physically and emotionally on this cruise.
