The placement for compression I have never heard before but it makes so much sense physiologically

Yeah, I had exactly the same problem - I watched way too many tutorials and just couldn’t unlock the sound I was looking for. At the same time, I knew exactly what sound I wanted to get because I could clearly hear it in my head.

And then I unlocked it completely by accident. I was sitting with my headphones on, messing around with EQ in my DAW while doing some chest-based harsh/drive vocals to bring out the frequencies I wanted - and suddenly I started screaming like Allt 😂

I freaked out, took my headphones off… and couldn’t do it again. Put them back on - and there it was again!

The sound is chesty, monstrous, fry-based, and distorted to absolute hell! 😂

Turns out I’d been doing it wrong before - I was trying to force the sound, when what I actually needed to do was RELAX the voice while still maintaining compression and air pressure. And apparently this is some kind of base sound, because it’s not loud at all - actually a little quieter than my normal speaking voice.

In my case, I guess if I want to make it louder, I first need to build up and strengthen this coordination. It feels completely new because I’m not engaging my false folds at all (at least in my mind), and there’s absolutely none of that scratchy or irritated feeling I sometimes get with loud harsh/drives.

The microphone just amplifies everything, so it sounds like I’m screaming like a freaking grizzly bear 🫣😂

So yeah… that’s the story! Sometimes need to step back, relax, and be quiet..

The point you raised about a fry scream being quieter than a belting style is something that was very insightful. I suspect a lot of singers, including myself, hear the 'loudness' of the screaming in their favourite song and don't keep the technical details of how/why it sounds like that --- it's the vocal that's been turned up during the mixing stage to make it as loud & on par with the raging guitars, drums, etc. If you try to sing/scream to a level where you can be heard alongside your favourite 'screamer' tune blasting in the car, for example, you'll wreck your throat after 5 minutes because you're pushing so hard to match the volume of the mixed + amplified vocal track.

This didn't help me because you spoke very little on placement. You switched so meant times to different techniques and barely touched on placement. Gonna say this isn't for me so will take your advice and find someone who speaks more to me. Here's some feedback, as I'm sure folks will pile on to criticize my comment and love-bomb you 😄, but it's a legitimate critique. I haven't worn out my voice in a while on a video and did so today on yours probably guessing a bit more than I should.

What's with all ya noobs pushing the breathing as if it's even top 50 in the priorities of good singing. 1:13: It's in the larynx boys, nothing to do with. 1:24 you literally shifted you larynx to make the difference in tone when you were trying to demonstrate chest panting.

Also you need to be able to do a fry scream, on command, in the middle of talking, with great tone to be giving advice. Not a half decent one 0:00 that still needs a lot of work that was cut in and probably took you 30 takes on a good day to cherry pick.

Don't take it personally, and keep singing and rocking dude, but this was a terrible instructional video that's not teaching people and doing more harm than good.

every time I try to do this a get a tickle in my throat. Have tried for so long and just can't get passed that.
