A swap meet in the summer of 1982. A dealer picks up an unbranded acoustic from a retired pattern maker's table, taps the top and announces to everyone within earshot: "Ten-dollar piece of firewood."
Three steps behind him, a man digging through a box of old pickups looks up. He has built his own guitar out of parts people threw away, so he knows what "junk" sounds like — and this isn't it.
Inside the soundhole there's a small stamped "W". That letter, and the favor Eddie asks the old craftsman before he leaves, are what this story is about.
Fiction. The craftsman, the dealer and the events are invented for the story.
