Why Every Blue-Eyed Person Alive Shares One Ancestor
Blue eyes have no blue pigment. What you're seeing is an optical illusion — light scattering inside an almost-empty iris, the exact same physics that makes the sky blue. For 300,000 years, every human had brown eyes. Then, 6,000–10,000 years ago near the Black Sea, one person was born with a single genetic switch that changed everything. Every blue-eyed person on Earth today descends from that one person.
In this video: the HERC2 mutation that "dimmed" brown eyes into blue, why Stone Age Europeans had dark skin AND blue eyes (not the pale, blond look you'd expect), how farming and wheat triggered the separate evolution of pale skin thousands of years later, and the competing theories for why blue eyes spread even though they offer zero survival advantage.
