"Endgame"



Endgame" is the final campaign mission of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009). Following the events of "Just Like Old Times," where Captain Price and Soap MacTavish infiltrated Shepherd's secret mountain fortress, this mission serves as the cinematic and brutal conclusion to the hunt for the rogue commander. The level begins with Price and Soap sprinting onto a sandy riverbank to commandeer a Zodiac speedboat in order to pursue General Shepherd, who is fleeing down the river in a heavily armored command boat. You control Soap as he pilots the Zodiac down a violent, winding river canyon while maintaining close proximity to Shepherd. Shadow Company soldiers line the cliffs and bridges above, raining down heavy gunfire and RPG rockets, while a Little Bird helicopter joins the fray by strafing the water with miniguns and dropping explosive fuel barrels directly into your path. Price sits in the bow of the boat, utilizing his M4A1 to detonate obstacles and pick off enemy gunners along the shoreline. The high-speed pursuit reaches a dead end as the river empties into a massive, yawning abyss where a Shadow Company MH-53 Pave Low helicopter hovers over the edge to extract Shepherd. As Shepherd’s boat is pulled up, Price takes the wheel so Soap can stabilize, allowing Price to take out his sniper rifle and fire precise shots through the chopper’s rotor blades. The damaged Pave Low spirals out of control and crashes violently into the desert flats below, while the leaderless Zodiac plunges over the massive waterfall, sending both men free-falling into the blinding mist. Soap wakes up heavily injured, disoriented, and completely isolated within a blinding desert dust storm near the canyon basin. Controlling a limping, blurred-vision Soap, you stagger forward through the debris field using only a combat knife, passing burning wreckage and dazed Shadow Company soldiers who are too wounded to offer resistance. Soap spots a bloodied Shepherd crawling away from the burning hull of the Pave Low and moves in for the kill. Soap lunges to stab Shepherd, but the general easily counters the attack, slams Soap against a rusted vehicle chassis, pins him to the dirt, and brutally drives his own combat knife deep into Soap’s chest, leaving him to bleed out in the sand. Shepherd stands over a dying Soap, delivering a final monologue explaining his twisted geopolitical motivations, revealing he orchestrated the entire global war to restore American military pride after losing 30,000 troops to the nuclear blast in the first game. Just as Shepherd loads his revolver to execute Soap, Captain Price tackles him from the side, and the two engage in a desperate, bare-knuckle fistfight right in front of Soap. Watching helplessly from the ground, you see Shepherd gain the upper hand, pinning Price down and beating him to death. You must repeatedly mash the interaction button to physically pull the bloody knife out of Soap's own chest cavity. With the last of his strength, Soap aims and hurls the knife across the clearing, striking Shepherd directly in his left eye and killing him instantly. Price collapses from his injuries but regains consciousness as Nikolai defies orders and arrives in a Little Bird helicopter to extract the duo. Nikolai warns that they are now the most wanted men in the world, to which Price grimly replies, "We'll find a place," before they load a barely conscious Soap into the chopper and fly off into the horizon, setting the stage for Modern Warfare 3.


Following the death of General Shepherd, Soap collapses onto his back in the dirt, exhausted and bleeding heavily from the knife wound in his chest. Captain Price, severely beaten and barely conscious, slowly crawls over to Soap and rolls him onto his side, attempting to assess the damage and keep him alive. As the screen begins to fade to black, the familiar sound of helicopter rotors cuts through the howling dust storm, and a Little Bird helicopter touches down nearby. Nikolai climbs out of the cockpit, defying orders to stay away, and runs over to the two men to help Price lift a semi-conscious Soap off the ground. As they carry him toward the chopper, Nikolai warns Price that they are now international fugitives and the most wanted men in the world, stating, "Price, you're not gonna believe this... they're looking for us everywhere," to which Price grimly replies, "We'll find a place." They load Soap into the back of the helicopter, and the screen fades to black as the aircraft lifts off into the sky, leaving Shepherd's body behind in the desert.
