Dude! Year and a Half is exactly what made ME get into sound engineering too! It was my first exposure to the multi-track recording process and I used to watch it all the time in the late 90s trying to pick up new stuff with each viewing. It's crazy how much good info is hidden in plain sight in that doc.

In the 90's Year and a half was like a magical movie for me and my friends. I had absolutely no idea what they were doing in it... even more - because Enough wasn’t my first language, I had no idea what they were talking about... not a word... but my friends and I watched it over and over again.
Thank you for your work and this video.

damn that really made the drums pop.

Definitely has that elusive Staub sound! Can't wait for the next video. Thanks for this, sir!

For my money, the Dyna-Comp is like gravy or cheddar cheese. It makes everything you put it on better. One of the greatest pieces of music gear ephemera there has ever been imho.

I also don't think there are any "bad" eras of the Dyna-Comp. Everything from OG "bud box," script logo versions, to brand new off the shelf ones sound great to me.

Allow me to share a little trick I often employ for getting big drum sounds. When tracking drums, I put a Dyna-Comp and an EHX Linear Power Booster on each one of my stereo room mics to blow them up.

It sounds fantastic full on, or in parallel. To make everyone more comfortable, I make a mult so I can have the room mics tracked with and without the DC and LPB pummelling them but I still insist on tracking with them instead of applying them in the mix. I don't know why but to me they just seem to react better thst way. Of course, YMMV but I highly recommend you or anyone reading try it.

I myself partially copped the idea from Joe Baresi who used EHX Linear Power Boosters on a pair of Neumann M49's that were the stereo room mics when recording the drums for Weezer's Pinkerton album.

Having loved the drum sounds on that record and having always used Dyna-Comps when recording and mixing since the days when guitar pedals were my only source of "outboard" gear, I figured to try the two together and it proved very fruitful in getting huge drum sounds.

Great channel you're building here! Shame that its so far beneath the highly refined skills of Mr. "Bratfauntleroy" to be causing him so much consternation but hey, you can't please everybody!
😆😆😆😆👌🏻💀⚰

Parallel comp rules!

More Randy Staub!!!

JP this is awesome! Thanks so much for sharing! What a gem this little plugin trick! they have a klone pedal free as well!

I just downloaded this plug and tried it like this. I also like it with the snare in there too.

So glad you showed us this!  Been trying to figure out how they got the black album kick to be so grabby.  I'm also convinced they used the 33609 on drum bus, it does a similar thing to the shells in general.  This was the missing link for me!

I like to see some Tchad Blacke techniques in your channel. Great work!!!

I gotta try this out, I have my dynacomp just as a paper weight on my desk so it should have some more usage lol
Thanks for the inspo!

killer way to add point to kik & snr... def gonna try this! & as soon as you mentioned NB i rolled my eyes like ugh... but I cant front those mixes are fkn sick!

its giving Helmet Betty kick and I'm not mad

Excellent stuff as usual.

these videos are awesome

Love this!

👍 great

Where can I get the Black álbum snare sample that you are using here? Great videos btw!!!

Thanks for the Dynacomp link. Any sound reason for the manufacturer to have dubbed a Dynacomp a "76" though?)

And are these Black Album Randy Staub drum samples, as well as the Linkin Park Andy Wallace samples, publicly available? Are they coming from live kits or drum machines originally?
