You are correct the stick becomes weakened over time, but the main wear is the damage done to the bowl the stick sits in, especially when operating the stick while pressing it in (this causes loose sticks, looking at you Mario Party 1). The stick and bowl themselves though are fairly simple plastic pieces which can easily be replicated, or possibly 3d printed, and replaced. In context of SM64, I would assume some people have broken their original analog stick(s) trying to learn how to do something related to speedrunning, like BLJ.

If you looked at the european versions (specifically spanish) of Mario 64 DS, it roughly reads "look for what is not reflected and the friend who might give you a clue" in which case, the one not reflected is Snowman's land's painting and the friend opposite to Wario's reflection is a Luigi painting. Hence the ally with info is actually Luigi.

Which does make sense. Luigi is the only character to access mirrors via the power flower and the painting acts as a subtle hint of how to access the wario painting.
