It's actually more impressive now that it got explained.

@CardVader 6 months ago

Now this is great sleight of hand and misdirection, performed live.

@rickelmonoggin 6 months ago

so how did he manage to solve the cube so quickly with just one hand?
A: he solved it quickly with just one hand

This is awesome! And I appreciate the compliments from everyone on this routine! Just curious so I know what to prepare for…when I release this, are you planning to buy it and make an updated video? Only asking because I have a couple things I don’t want to get out. For example, audience members do mix up the cube in the live show (timing decision for TV). And, shells are actually not used. Just not really interested in releasing this routine if it’s just going to be put on YouTube after. I’m fine with this video.

Penn even complimented Bryan's patter, telling him it was the best he'd ever heard on the show. Having such prepared patter really sells that the entire trick is not only well-rehearsed, but every moment is essential so you don't even wonder why he doesn't ask someone else to mix up the cube.

1:45 Look at the table. You can see the reflection of the screens behind him. Where are the collapsed fake cubes?

@VisionThing 6 months ago

So we have these real good magicians… and then we have Dynamo, who’ll just use CGI.

The real cube is the friends we made along the way 😂

Would love to see " Derren Brown guesses word on random page" trick where he sits in a room with a dude who is reading a book for an hour and then guesses the page and word the guy stops on. I can understand how he guessed the page, but not the word. He does some other cool stuff in that video that I don't understand.

This has long been one of my favorite performances out there, Bryan is truly incredible. Amazing that I never noticed we don't see the yellow face on 2 of the cubes...because it's not there!

What an elegant design of a trick and superb performance. Thank you for the reveal!

If you understand rubics cube faces and algorithms, it's the same cube mix up shown from different angles, so it looks mixed up in different ways. The centre cubes on a 9 point face never move from the other centres, they are always in the same order. White opposite yellow, red and orange, blue and green. But show different centres of the same mix, and it can easy enough to fool people that it's a different mix. Also, some moves can be made redundent when mixing on stage, like rotating the top face left, and then rotating it back. That's a simple one, but there are more complex ways to do two, three four moves which just neutralise each other.

Still, it's an impressive display of variation and leading the audience and judges to see what they want to see.

Here in Italy, a young illusionist called Federico Miccoli presented a similar trick in the TV show "I Fatti Vostri" ("Your Own Business") on Rai 2. The boy started by asking the presenter of the show to scramble a Rubik's cube. Then, he put the scrambled cube into a paper bag and after snapping his fingers he took out the solved Rubik's cube from the same bag.

I reckon the inside of the flat pack cubes has velcro/magicians gum and he sticks them to the folder before he tears it and throws it - so as not to leave the flat pack on the table.

That, or he pockets them when he does the midsection with the jacket.

At the end, the reflection of the cube suggests that they are not still on the table

Is it just me or is this more impressive now that it is revealed what he is doing. Solving that cube one-handed, and so smoothly is next level 💯🔥.

@lefear2 6 months ago

That's one way that trick could be done. The problem is when he picks up the folder, for a brief time you can see the surface of the table and it is uniformly glossy. If he collapses the shelled cubes a matte or cloth surface would hide the collapsed cubes better, but his table is uniformly reflective with no bumps or imperfections. Alternatively he could of tucked the collapsed cubes into the folder, however he'd be taking a chance that it could fall out of the sleeve when he tears it in half and throws it to the ground.

Man!!! I would never guess that!!!
Also I want to point it out that the way you explain all the phases and the way you decide to creat the animation part makes our understanding very easy. But this (your work) is something very hard to do. Takes a lot of time not only to produce but also to decide how to explain. SUPER congrats!!!

I saw a video somewhere on Rubik's cubes that there are sequences which, when performed, move you back to where you started. So he could be doing like 80% of that sequence and needing to solve just a few moves, not needing to repeat whatever he did backwards. In the slowdowns, you can see that he even fakes some of the moves, so the 'scrambling' of the cube looks all the more impressive. I think a bit of a telltale sign is that 2x2 colour square, which can be seen most of the time he is going to place the cube behind the green folder. |
Still very well thought out and excellently performed.

Also, excellent observation on how it was all done.

This act fascinated me on Fool Us. Very interesting to see the techniques used. Never would have guessed.

Wow, what a great analysis. I knew already of the use of an empty shell, but this trick was of another level. Incredible work of Bryan Saint. His performance was great. One slight mistake showing the dark side of the cube.
