VIVA - Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, conveyed input received from the Development Control and Special Investigation Agency (Bappisus) regarding the use of uninhabited islands, including those inhabited by crocodiles, as centralized rehabilitation centers for drug convicts with user status. This measure is being taken to address overcrowding in correctional institutions (prisons).

"Mr. Aris, Head of Bappisus, was also invited by the President some time ago, and he expressed the view that the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the Indonesian National Police (Polri) would likely be involved," Yusril said in a press conference at the Coordinating Ministry for Law, Human Rights, and Mimipas Office in Kuningan, South Jakarta, Friday, October 9, 2026.

"Yes, we are choosing uninhabited islands. Many of our islands, sometimes up to 700 hectares in size, are uninhabited, and crocodiles live there," he continued.

The Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and Indonesian National Police (Polri) will be tasked with providing discipline training and skills development, such as farming and fishing, to drug convicts.
