Join me on a personal journey back to the heart of Penang, where I revisit the five iconic food spots that shaped my childhood. From the bustling mainland to the historic streets of George Town, these aren't just famous eats; they are the tastes of home. For each treasure, I’ve shared the location so you can experience these authentic flavours for yourself. Let's go!
📍 1. 和樂園茶餐室 (Kedai Makan Dan Minuman Wah Lok Hooi) – Bukit Mertajam
Our journey begins on the Penang mainland in Bukit Mertajam at 和樂園茶餐室. This is the place for a true Hokkien Mee fix, a dish that is pure comfort in a bowl. The soup here is famously bold and flavourful, packed with the essence of prawns and pork, and topped with the essential crispy pork lard. Whether you have it dry with a rich, dark soy sauce base or in the classic soup version, this is the flavour that defines Penang for me. If you’re feeling adventurous, ask for their special chili paste to kick it up a notch. It’s the ultimate way to start a food hunt in Penang.
📍 2. Tho Yuen Restaurant – Historic Campbell Street
Next, we head to the heritage heart of George Town, stepping into the iconic Tho Yuen on Campbell Street. This place is a time capsule, having served Cantonese favourites for decades. While many may know it from the past for its Hainanese chicken rice, I come here for the incredible Cantonese noodle dishes and their legendary morning dim sum. The atmosphere here is classic old Penang, and the food is consistently delicious, making it the perfect spot for a mid-morning brunch. Be sure to try their homemade egg tarts if you can get there early enough—they're a local secret!
📍 3. Free School Road Goreng Pisang – Jelutong
No food trail is complete without a stop for some crispy snacks, and this stall on Free School Road in Jelutong is legendary. While it’s famously called "Goreng Pisang" (Banana Fritters), the real stars here are often the other delights. The deep-fried "nian gao" (sticky rice cake) sandwiched between slices of yam and sweet potato is an absolute must-try. I also love their crispy fried mung beans—they are double coated and double fried for the perfect crunch. Even if the banana fritters are elusive, this stall always delivers on that perfect, nostalgic teatime snack.
📍 4. Pulau Tikus Nyonya Stall – Jelutong
For a taste of authentic Nyonya heritage, we stop at the famous Pulau Tikus Nyonya Stall. This is the spot for the best Nasi Lemak on the island. It’s all about the perfectly fragrant coconut rice, paired with their signature sambal belacan that is simply addictive.
📍 5. Big Prawn Fish Head Beehun – New Lane
We end our food trail back in George Town on New Lane, at the famous Big Prawn Fish Head Beehun stall. This is the "atas" (high-class) version of a breakfast classic. You get to pick your own giant, super crispy deep-fried prawn to go with your bed of fried bee hoon and a piece of fried fish. The special homemade sauce that comes with it is the perfect accompaniment. It’s a luxurious, crispy, and utterly delicious meal that feels like a real treat.
